As a member of the Premium Audit Team, this person will be responsible for conducting on-site visits at policyholder and / or related accountant’s locations to both validate operational exposure and examine financial information necessary to accurately calculate final earned premium for policyholder billing purposes in compliance with state rules, statutes, and rating bureau requirements.
This role plays an integral part in the overall underwriting results of the company, requiring exceptional customer service, relationship development with policyholders and agents, and company promotion.
You will audit small to moderate size risks for a heterogeneous group of industries with a primary focus on construction related risks for Workers’ Compensation.
Substantial independent action and judgement is required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Meet with policyholders at their place of business to accurately audit exposures for Worker's Compensation policies .
- Perform on-site inspections, investigations, and reviews for any aspect of the business necessary to verify premium and rate related information.
- Review required policyholder financial records, including, but not limited to, federal and state quarterly tax returns, payroll records, financial statements, general ledger, and profit & loss statements.
- Obtains a thorough description of insured's business operations to assist underwriter in risk assessment.
- Apply knowledge to determine correct exposures and classifications for use in audit process using external resources such as the National Council on Compensation Insurance (NCCI), International Standards Organization (ISO) and other audit-related publications as well as any available internal documents such as underwriting notes and / or Loss Control reports, if warranted.
- Performs some mail or telephone audits, as needed.
- Prepares detailed audit reports and submits to company audit department for documentation, processing, and billing.
- Completes audit summaries by entering payroll records, quarterly statements, receipts, etc.
- Assists audit review department and / or resolves any audit dispute through review and research, providing any correction worksheets needed for adjusting a policyholder’s bill.
- Communicate any potential concerns discovered with insurance fraud department, collaborating when necessary.
- Schedule future audits within required timelines and designated travel routes.
- Other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES)
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, insurance or related business field or equivalent relevant experience.
- Minimum of five years of premium audit experience, preferred.
- Strong math and accounting aptitude with keen attention to detail.
- Experience to analyze, research and resolve audit issues.
- Proven ability to work independently and with others under minimal supervision.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks while meeting deadlines.
- Possess strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Travel as required.
