AVL Test Systems, Inc. is hiring a System Design Engineer to join our team. The System Design Engineer works within a team to design test systems to meet various project requirements.
They also, troubleshoot complex problems and develop solutions, in addition to taking charge of projects and driving them to completion while managing the cost and time estimates.
The System Design Engineer has ownership of large complex test systems and supervises and mentors other commissioning engineers.
They are responsible for one or more subsystems with regard to the technical function, including interfaces to other subsystems, while considering given engineering cost & engineering schedule constraints.
The role supports the project manager & the onsite team during the integration, verification & validation phase. The System Design Engineer position collaborates closely with other engineers to clarify & monitor interfaces with the interacting / surrounding subsystems to ensure a proper working system.
This position is located at AVL's primary North America location in Plymouth, MI. This position will have the ability to work a hybrid schedule with partial in-office and partial remote location.
Qualified candidates will possess the required degree in addition to experience with emissions, development, environmental heating & cooling, and / or design.

The System Design Engineer provides the required systems integration and design necessary to support sales activities or execute customer projects according to the ITS Project Engineering Process.
The specific roles of a System Design Engineer include :
- Continuous collaboration, alignment of interfaces and solutions with other engineering disciplines and global community
- Reuse of solutions and best practices done in other projects
- Single point technical contact for customer projects,provides deviation & exclusion to RFQ
- Completes engineering evaluation, manufacturing and installation documentation necessary to deliver test system in accordance with customer specifications
- Support during manufacturing, installation, commissioning, acceptance, warranty phase
- Executes project in compliance with engineering principles, local codes, company standards(processes, technology, methodology), maintainability and customer requirements
- Coordinates and executes technical design reviews
- Meet milestones and ensure fulfilment of functional requirements per project demands
- Utilize appropriate CAD and engineering tools to create best in class solutions
- Supports Sales by providing technical input, labor & material estimates to customer requirements
- Provide feedback and information for continuous improvement
- Support problem solving process, 8D reports and quality department
- Continuous increase of performance by acquiring skills in usage of tools, modules and products
- Define test cases (only in the role as system integrator)
- Support the preparation of function description and test cases
- Develop spare part plans and maintenance documentation
- Additional tasks / duties as required
QUALIFICATIONS / SKILLS :
Experience and Education 3-5+ years of experience in area of expertise Bachelor’s degree Chemical Engineering / related OR 4+ years of experience in addition to required experience Master’s degree in engineering preferred Strong understanding of fluid dynamics and heat transfer equations.
Proficiency in the use of chemistry and thermodynamic equations. Experience with dew point curves, air movement, calibration analysis, duct sizing for pressure losses, chemical balance equations is a plus Knowledge of Fourier transform spectroscopy is a plus.
Automotive experience, particularly in combustion engine systems or chemistry, is a plus. Familiarity with ISO 9003 and ISO 17025 standards is a plus.
A System Design Engineer is expected to have demonstrated abilities in the following areas :
- Commercial Technical quote lead for a small size program Efficient on time delivery of project expectations with consistently high feedback
- Technical Actively pursues utilization of Global AVL products and technology Able to create ground up designs to meet customer needs Strong knowledge with local codes and regulations as they relate to automotive test facilities and equipment Maintain current knowledge of industry benchmarks and trends Proficient in MS Office applications, including Excel, Visio and Project Knowledge of customer base and customer applications
- Independent functionality in the following areas / systems (relative to area of expertise) : AutoCAD or Eplan drawing package for electrical schematics Solidworks, REVIT or AutoCAD for mechanical and 3D designs Data acquisition and controls system design and implementation Pneumatic and hydraulic design Frequency and stress analysis 480V / 220V / 110V power distribution systems Building utility systems including ventilation, water systems, air, fuel, fire protection, and pipe distribution Knowledge of SAP, EPDM is an advantage Analyze & create emissions calculations.
Ensure that calculations and methods of sampling comply with EPA CFR Title 40
