The Division of Transportation Planning and Management (TPM) is responsible for the safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible movement of people and goods on the City's streets, supporting the larger goals of economic and social vitality for people living, working, and doing business in New York City.
The Division’s responsibilities include planning, street design, technical analysis, signs, transit development, freight mobility and markings, ensuring the safety of motor vehicle occupants, pedestrians, and cyclists.
The Office Livable Streets (OLS) is tasked with prioritizing strategic planning, community engagement, research, policy, design, implementation, and long-term management.
Their goal is to create streets that are livable, supporting safety, accessibility, inclusion, resiliency, active modes, community cohesion, and economic vitality citywide.
Additionally, they aim to enhance New York City's pedestrian, bicycle, and micro-mobility networks, providing comfortable, connected, green, and reliable transportation options across the five boroughs.
They place special emphasis on Priority Investment Areas, mode shift, and reimagining streets. The office also develops innovative new programs, design typologies, project delivery, and analysis tools to meet the demands of a rapidly changing population with evolving needs and technologies.
OLS is looking to hire a Traffic Control Inspector (TCI) for the Street Improvement Projects (SIP) Unit. The SIP unit is responsible for prioritizing and coordinating the implementation of Street Improvement Projects (SIPs) which enliven our public spaces and improve safety and mobility throughout NYC for pedestrians, cyclists, and motor vehicle occupants.
The SIP Inspector will perform field visits, traveling solo or as part of a team. During the SIP planning phase, the SIP Inspector will visit locations, alone or alongside a project manager, and perform site surveys including measuring street and lane widths, inspecting existing infrastructure and street furniture and conduct observations such as documenting pedestrian / cyclist / driver behavior, recording travel patterns, documenting parking regulations, identifying safety and mobility concerns.
The SIP Inspector must document their observations accurately and consistently. During the SIP implementation phase, the candidate will visit project sites independently to hang signage and inspect construction progress.
The selected candidate will be responsible for inspecting implementation progress by comparing on-the-ground changes to engineering drawings, talking to in-house and contractor construction crews to get updates and schedules, taking photos of work-in-progress and more.
The SIP Inspector must document this information accurately and consistently and share it with the SIP Project Manager, often in real time from the field.
Office work includes meeting with SIP Project Managers to review work, documenting field inspections, setting inspection schedules, sharing best practices to improve performance.
The ideal candidate will also be a detail oriented, curious, and capable team player with a positive attitude and strong organizational, and communication skills.
The selected candidate must demonstrate a willingness to work in field in all seasons or at DOT warehouse facilities, traveling primarily by biking, walking or public transit.
The candidate will be responsible for ensuring adherence to all agency safety rules and regulations in creating a safe work environment for themselves and colleagues, ensuring all safety equipment and gear are used and worn properly where / when required.

Preferred Skills
Experience as a field employee, and proficiency in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint are preferred. Ability to read engineering drawings is a plus.
