Overview

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Behavioral Service Specialist monitors and provides active support to clients and their direct support staff in residential support settings for individuals with complex behavioral challenges.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Responds urgently to behavioral events, either by phone, video or in person, to provide involved staff with necessary assistance which may include but is not limited to direct intervention as well as post event encouragement and practical support to move beyond the behavioral event.

Provides updates to the Behavioral Services Coordinator, Director of Behavioral Services, and Regional managers as needed.

Assists in investigating behavioral incidents to identify the cause(s) of the event, the responses initiated by staff and client responses.

May conduct meetings with staff, other non-employee witnesses, and potentially clients. Reviews staff training records. Reports findings and preliminary recommendations to the Director of Behavioral Services.

Works with the Behavioral Services Coordinator or Director of Behavioral Services to revise recommended actions and shares final with regional leaders as directed.

  • Mentors direct support supervisors and non-supervisory staff through on-the-floor training under the supervision of the Behavioral Services Coordinator or Director of Behavioral Services.
  • Acts in the company’s best interests for quality service delivery by promoting the consistent practice of company, division, and program standards.
  • Assists in preparation of a written root cause analysis report based on investigation findings received from investigative team regarding client behavioral events that resulted in an HIL employee incurring a lost time injury and submits it to the Behavioral Services Coordinator or Director of Behavioral Services for review and direction on next steps.
  • May participate in presenting verbal or written reports to internal or external agency employees or stakeholders and updates Behavioral Support Plan as assigned by the Behavioral Services Coordinator or Director of Behavioral Services.
  • Assists in the enhancement of company trainings based on experiences with behavioral events and best practices identified through the review of behavioral events.

May be required to serve as a certified trainer for Mandt and CPI.

  • Recommends new evidence-based training programs for staff based on client groups and individual diagnoses to increase the effectiveness of staff support and interventions and to decrease escalation of agitation requiring intervention.
  • Assists with providing continuing education, quality assurance and ongoing support on the proper use of approved restrictive measures and behavioral support techniques per individual Behavioral Support and Crisis Plans.
  • Maintains regular communication with the Director Behavioral Services Coordinator in regards to behavioral incidents, issues and recommendations regarding Individual Behavioral Support and Crisis Plans, and any other event or aspect that may affect the Department of Behavioral Support Services.
  • Promptly reports any arrests / charges issued by law enforcement to the Supervisor.
  • Maintains a high level of professionalism and confidentiality in all interactions with co-workers, vendors, customers, clients, guardians, and other external stakeholders.
  • Conducts self in positive, respectful and collaborative manner demonstrating proactive actions and decision making to ensure supportive work relationships and a healthy and safe environment.

Demonstrates flexibility, autonomy, responsiveness, and a high level of initiative.

  • Maintains a work schedule conducive to successfully performing position duties. This position requires travel within the division, sometimes on short notice, and requires the use of the individual’s personal vehicle.
  • Develops and maintain collaborative relationships within and between various departments, divisional / regional leadership, and the broader organization.
  • Maintains and applies knowledge of organizational policies, administrative procedures, confidentiality requirements, and Employee Handbook information.
  • Reports allegations of abuse, conflict of interest, harassment, or fraud to appropriate level of management.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL and ABILITY REQUIREMENTS

1. Requires a high school diploma or equivalent and two (2) or more years of experience working in the Human Service field specifically with individuals who present mild to significant behavioral support needs.

Additionally, training and / or mentorship experience is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in psychology, social work or related human services field preferred.

2. Exceptional problem-solving and communication skills. Highly organized with an ability to work under tight deadlines and with little direction.

Must possess excellent presentation skills and be able to make sound decisions in a timely and confident manner.

3. Proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

4. Flexibility with schedule, ability to work various shifts, and ability to respond urgently to situations as they arise.

5. Has valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and maintains insurance on personal vehicle.
