    SUMMARY : The Chair is a member of the faculty at their home campus and serves as the academic leader for the programs within their assigned discipline for the South University system.

    The Department Chair reports to the Assistant / Associate Dean and campus Dean of Academic Affairs and interfaces with campus academic personnel and the Campus Director for the efficient and effective delivery of their assigned programs.

    The Chair is responsible for fulfilling all duties in conformity with the policies and procedures of the University as well as those processes and mechanisms developed on the campus at which the program is offered.

    The Department Chair may also serve as a Program Director at the assigned campus. If so, the Chair will also be responsible for the duties listed in the Program Director's job description.

    KEY JOB ELEMENTS :

    • Interview and recommend candidates for faculty positions within the department across all campuses.
    • Ensure faculty credentials meet the university requirements and accreditation standards are properly documented.
    • Conduct on-site evaluations and monitor annual reviews of all faculty members within the department.
    • Act as a liaison between faculty / Program Directors and the Assistant / Associate Dean.
    • Supervise and write curriculum changes for the department as deemed necessary in collaboration with other campuses of South University.
    • Serve as an academic advisor.
    • Ensure implementation of appropriate and correct departmental course syllabi using current published Academic Course Outlines.
    • Assist with the development of curricular and policy revisions as requested by the Assistant / Associate Dean, College Dean, or Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs.

    Assist in the textbook selection process for courses within the department and maintain the master booklist for the academic degree program.

    • Assist in the preparation of the annual budget for the department and monitor expenditures.
    • Ensure that program advisory committees are formed and meet at least twice a year.
    • Perform instructional, service, and scholarship duties as outlined in the Full-time Faculty job description.
    • Advise campus program directors in academic matters and accreditation issues.
    • Complete at least one professional development activity per year.
    • Play an integral role in the student recruitment process and growth of assigned programs.
    • Participate in departmental leadership meetings held by the Assistant / Associate Dean or College Dean and contribute to the work of this group.
    • Serve the College and University on committees as requested by the Assistant / Associate Dean.
    • Adhere to university policies as described in the Employee Handbook, the Faculty Supplement to the Employee Handbook, job description, or other separate guidelines.
    • Perform other duties as assigned by the Assistant / Associate Dean

    REQUIREMENTS :

    • Terminal degree in the discipline
    • A minimum of 2 years of higher education experience
    • Practical experience in the discipline of the program
    • Evidence of management experience or potential
    • Experience with computerized administrative systems
    • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret accreditation criteria, state agency regulations, and academic journals
    • Ability to resolve inquiries and complaints from employees, students, regulatory agencies, or members of the academic or business community
    • Ability to effectively present information to faculty, academic and campus leaders, corporate leaders, and public groups
    • Other requirements specific to the discipline
