The Mental Health Association of Alameda County (MHAAC) is a well-established non-profit organization with long term staff that assists and advocates for people with mental illness and their family members through programs including the Family Education Resource Center, the Family Partnership Program, and the Patients' Rights Advocacy Program.
Together, these programs assist thousands of people with serious mental illness and their family members every year. We envision a world without stigma where people with mental health challenges and their family members are free to live their best lives.
MHAAC's current budget is around $5 million.
The Staff Accountant assists the Director of Finance and Accounting with managing and reporting on the financial resources of the agency.
Responsibilities include accounts payable, accounts receivables, reconciling bank statements, creating reports, preparing budgets, audit preparation, and generating financial forecasts.
Typical Duties and Responsibilities
Accounts Payable Function : review voucher for proper approval, coding, and documentation before entering into the accounting software.
Prepare biweekly checks. File scanned payments and documentation
- Accounts Receivables Function : prepare and submit monthly billings to contract sources and maintain related files, prepare annual cost settlement, prepare financial contract renewal documents
- Journal Entry : prepare journal entries for electronic payments on the monthly bank statement
- Payroll : prepare biweekly payroll, review accuracy of timecards on time and attendance in Paychex before transmitting into the payroll system
- General Ledger : maintain prepaid general ledger schedule and deposit ledger schedule. Recognize monthly prepaid expenses in the accounting system
- Bank Deposit : obtain checks to MHAAC from the Administrative Secretary. Prepare deposit slips and scan the checks / deposit slips to the Director of Finance and Administration before depositing the checks in the bank
- Reporting : prepare annual 1099's (misc. income for contractors and stipend recipients
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance
- Must successfully pass a fingerprint background check by CADOJ and FBI
- Must be able to provide proof of full Covid-19 vaccination plus CDC and / or Alameda County recommended boosters
- Have proficiency in Microsoft Office - Outlook (email), Word (documents), and Excel (spreadsheets)
- Have a valid CA Drivers License, daily access to a working motor vehicle, maintain legally required vehicle liability insurance and have an acceptable motor vehicle report as determined by MHAAC's insurance broker
Preferred Qualifications
- One year of accounting experience
- Experience delivering services using video based platforms such as Zoom
- Bilingual in one of Alameda County's threshold languages : Cantonese, Farsi, Mandarin, Spanish, Tagalog, Vietnamese

- Pay : 33.64 per hour
- FSLA Status : Nonexempt
- Days / Times : Monday-Friday, 9 am - 5 pm
- Location : 954 60th Street, Suite 10, Oakland, CA 94608. Work from home option may be available after successful completion of 3-month introductory period
