Essential Duties :

  • Administer medications in accordance with accepted practices presented in the Virginia Board of Nursing Medication Aide Regulations.
  • Document in Medication Administration Record (MAR) all medications administered.
  • Dispose of contaminated equipment as directed by facility policy to comply with OSHA standards.
  • Check and record vital signs, weights and blood sugars as ordered and record.
  • Alert nursing of outdated / damaged / contaminated medications as soon as possible.
  • Report observation / actual symptoms to the Charge Nurse who will then be responsible for communicating effectiveness of prescribed medications and any adverse reactions or suspected side effects to the prescribing physician.
  • Successfully pass a medication administration observation at least annually.
  • Provide for or assist patients with activities of daily living as needed, including bathe / shower according to schedule, oral care, toileting, dressing, etc.
  • Assist residents with transfers and ambulation as directed and ordered by the physician using proper body mechanics.

Use of facility gait belts and mechanical devices is required.

  • Assist other staff with heavy lifting, transferring, and use of proper equipment according to policy and physicians’ orders.
  • Check and record vital signs and weights and blood sugars as assigned.
  • With proper training, perform restorative nursing techniques including proper positioning, brace application, Active and Passive Range of Motion.
  • Help admit and discharge residents according to community procedure.
  • Keep resident’s rooms, dining area, utility room, and other areas of the facility clean and orderly.
  • Turn and position high risk, immobile residents in accordance with positioning schedules and provide skin assessment and preventive skin care as per facility policy.

Qualifications :

  • High school graduate / GED
  • Current registration as a Medication Aide in good standing issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
  • Current certification as a Nurse Aide in good standing issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including customer service, patience, empathy and compassion
  • Effective communication skills
  • Good collaboration and teamwork skills
  • Fast and adaptive problem-solving abilities
  • Keen attention to detail
  • In-depth understanding of patient care policies and regulations
  • Familiarity with symptoms and signs of improvement for a number of medical conditions
  • Comfortable working with specific populations of patients, including elderly patients and those with special needs
  • Physical strength and stamina
