As the Healthcare & Education Industry Practice Leader at The Hartford, your primary goal is to successfully advance our specialization efforts across Middle and Large Commercial.

Leading a team, this individual will operate with a high degree of underwriting authority. Implementing key strategic initiatives that maintain existing profit margins and advance growth are foundational elements of this opportunity.

This role requires high level engagement and collaboration with field partners across all levels of underwriting, product, actuary, leadership, and the ability to foster strong working relationship with key external distribution partners.

In addition to driving key strategic initiatives this role will also contribute to advancing our underwriting guidelines, strengthening appetite alignment, prompting product enhancements and innovation, and enabling routines that drive One Hartford solutions.

Cross collaboration in the deployment of risk engineering, claims services, and sharing in the design and implementation of underwriting training in support of advancing our specialization efforts will be critical in the success of this role as well.

Coaching, mentoring, and influencing outcomes in partnership with field leaders and underwriters are foundational behaviors.

This role will take ownership and accountability for the financial profit and growth within the General Industries portfolio.

It is also expected this individual will support, innovate, and enable a broader approach to industry specialization across Middle & Large Commercial.

Responsibilities

  • Ownership and accountability for influencing and shaping strategic initiatives that advance the P&L within the General Industries portfolio.
  • Portfolio Leadership & Monthly operating routines : Capitalize on opportunities for profitable growth and recognize the need to take-action on profit improvement areas withing the portfolio.
  • Fully engage with and understand the local marketplace dynamics, competitors, market trends, and opportunities associated with your Industry Portfolios under leadership.
  • In partnership with field teammates, engage with our specialized agents / brokers by acting as a subject matter expect, seeking out opportunities to develop relationships, discuss market trends, new opportunities, new products, and service needs.
  • External focus and presence within key geographies for the purpose of relationship building, fostering learning events, new business pipeline development, proactive renewal game planning, and alignment of strategic initiatives.
  • Indirect accountability for supporting and enabling product integration within the General Industries offering and or promoting strategic cross sell opportunities with targeted business units across MLC.
  • One Hartford mindset with a passion for cross selling and seeking out every potential solution for a customer across our MLC / GS product capabilities.
  • Promote and increase in local office underwriting knowledge by providing technical underwriting guidance on risk selection, exposure analysis, loss analysis / adequate loss picks, pricing adequacy, proper program structure, and the appropriate overall account level risk reward.
  • Foster strong relationships and collaboration with internal customers (local office underwriters, Managing Directors, RVPs and DEs)
  • Embrace new ideas in support of innovation, product development and appetite expansion
  • Talent & Leadership Development - coach, mentor, and influence underwriting community across General Industries; expand network across MLC and into Global Specialty.
  • Project work that servers to advance our position within the marketplace and advance our financial position relative to plan
  • Be responsive, act with a sense of urgency, offer solutions, promote teamwork, and collaboration

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of Middle Market Property and Casualty lines underwriting experience
  • Strong technical underwriting skills with the ability to make timely and quality underwriting decisions
  • Prior leadership experience preferred but not required
  • Understands and can execute underwriting portfolio leadership routines including identifying underwriting trends, product, and strategy to maintain or expand profit margin.
  • Able to assess, create, and execute key strategic initiatives
  • Ability to interact effectively and build strong relationships with individuals internally and externally
  • Demonstrated creative problem solving and innovative thinking
  • Prior experience in leading projects preferred
  • Able to deliver outcomes and achieve financial results as well as company goals
  • Strong influencing leadership skills
  • Team player with outstanding inter-personal skills
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity in a matrix organization
  • Strong internal customer service orientation
  • Ability to travel as needed
  • Strong communication skills both written and verbal
  • BS / BA degree or equivalent in experience.
  • CPCU or other related designation(s) attractive.

This role can be based in any one of our 29 regional field offices. The Hartford is proud to offer a hybrid work model that supports flexibility.

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role.

The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition.

The annualized base pay range for this role is :

$147,920 - $221,880
