Position Summary :
The position is a part-time, temporary employee of the City of Prescott assigned to the Fire Department. The Fire Inspector is responsible for conducting building and event safety inspections, code analysis of conditions, and meeting with occupants and owners to educate and gain compliance with Federal, State, and City of Prescott rules, regulations, policies, procedures, codes, and standards and ordinances related to fire codes and enforcement.
Additionally, the position will perform site visits at events within the community to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and public safety requirements for crowds, vendor tents, and food service vehicles.
The position will participate in the ongoing code review and development process for future adoption. This position works directly with the public when presenting fire and life safety information and education.

Essential Duties :
- Evaluates and resolves problems with industrial, new, and existing commercial and residential construction and special events for compliance with all applicable fire safety codes
- Resolves life safety issues and evaluates life safety systems in all structures for code compliance and maintains documentation
- Reviews new materials and methods in building construction to determine acceptance.
- Confers with architects, contractors, and engineers to interpret code requirements and restrictions to resolve problems.
Evaluates construction plans
- Researches and analyzes hazardous materials for fire and health limits, proper storage, use, and dispensing applications, and resolves problems encountered
- Assists with code development and interpretation
- Responds to code questions from city staff and the general public
- Assists public education with handout materials and teaching programs
- Plans occupancy evaluations and maintains documentation
- Photographs code violations, gather evidence and prepares legal reports for litigation.
- Schedules timely inspection of new construction, businesses, and Tenet Improvements (TI's)
- Performs field inspections of fire and life safety protection systems and other occupancies
- Performs analysis and inspection of special events for code compliance and safety requirements that align with the city's adopted codes and standards
- Performs fire and life safety plan reviews and coordinates with other city departments to ensure plans are reviewed for code compliance
- Documents inspections, interactions on inspections, and meetings
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be required
- Performs other duties as assigned
Qualifications :
Education and Experience :
High School Diploma and 20 hours of college-level coursework in Fire Science I or a related field. Four (4) years of combined experience as a firefighter, fire inspector, fire plans examiner, code enforcement official, or equivalent combination.
Experience with building and fire systems, plan reviews, and inspections of Fire and Life Safety systems. A combination of demonstrated professional experience in building construction or inspection, engineering, or knowledge of building systems can substitute for these requirements at the discretion of the City.
Licensing, Certification, and Other Requirements :
- Must obtain International Code Council Fire Code Certification (Fire Inspector I level) within one (1) year of hire.
- Candidate must possess a valid Arizona driver's license.
- Candidate of choice must pass a pre-employment background check and drug screening prior to being places in the position.

- Knowledge of fire detection and extinguishing systems
- Knowledge of hazardous materials, proper storage, use, application, and response to fire elements and requirements of a legal report
- Knowledge of Federal, State, and City of Prescott Fire Codes and adopted standards and engineering guidelines
- Knowledge of building and fire protection plan review
- Knowledge of principles and methods of fire prevention and fire inspection, fire codes, building codes, and related codes and their interpretation and intent

- Ability to operate complex photography and video equipment, hand tools, and hazardous materials testing equipment
- Ability to operate a flow meter when determining hydraulic calculations of fire protection systems
- Ability to enter reports and inspections in the appropriate databases
- Ability to analyze, interpret, and explain technical fire and building codes, ordinances, plans and specifications as they apply to specific situations
- Ability to analyze computerized data and operate computerized data entry and retrieval systems
