Position Summary

The Director of Nursing manages and leads programs designed to provide learning opportunities for students within the discipline of nursing.

  • The Director of Nursing ensures the implementation of nursing policy and procedures; continued accreditation of nursing programs;
  • fiscal management of nursing programs; faculty and professional staff recruitment, development, and evaluation; leads and supports faculty in continuous curriculum / program review and improvement;

assists in the coordination of student lab and clinical placement; general supervision of the teaching, recruitment, service, and related scholarly activities of the college.

Essential Job Functions

  • Directs the daily operations of the Registered Nursing and Licensed Practical Nursing Programs.
  • Develops nursing course schedules each semester, assigning faculty loads per college policies, budget considerations, and faculty credentials, experience, and areas of expertise.
  • Works with the Nursing Program Coordinator (NPC) and Simulation Coordinator to ensure adequate learning experiences for nursing students in skills lab, simulation lab, and clinical environments.

Establishes, maintains, and evaluates formal and informal working relationships with community and clinical agencies involved in the provision of program curricula and student achievement of course and program learning outcomes.

  • Hires, supervises, and evaluates nursing program faculty, adjunct faculty, and staff.
  • Ensures nursing program offerings are accurately reflected in the college catalog, program webpages, and publications.
  • Prepares a comprehensive yearly budget reflecting the needs of all nursing programs with input from program faculty for consideration by division dean and VPI.

Monitors expenditures within the confines of the approved budget, keeping the dean informed of any variances. Assists in allocating additional funds for the program from alternate sources such as grants.

  • Works with nursing faculty and staff to maintain and update program policies and procedures.
  • Works with nursing faculty to maintain current course outcome summaries for all nursing courses. Facilitates accurate submission of curriculum documents to the Curriculum Committee, Division Dean, and VPI.

Facilitates an accurate accounting of course nursing outlines, class syllabi, and other instructional materials per course and nursing program option.

  • Works with nursing faculty and staff to monitor adequacy of instructional equipment, computer hardware, instructional software, and related supplies to ensure currency of nursing program practice, making recommendations to the Division Dean as appropriate.
  • Ensures effective operation of clinical practicums by assisting the NPC with organizing, supervising, and evaluating clinical sites and preceptors as per course, program, and accreditation standards.
  • Ensures students meet health, background, and drug screen requirements, as well as individual site requirements, prior to clinical placement
  • Serves as the college’s representative and primary contact for clinical partners / agencies, facilitating clinical placements suitable to meet program and course needs.

Maintains positive relationships with existing clinical partners and explores and seeks out new clinical placements when needed.

  • With Division Dean and NPC, maintains and obtains clinical affiliation contracts and mandatory legal documentation such as license verification, liability insurance, qualifications of preceptors and preceptor orientation for the nursing programs.
  • Explores and develops additional health education opportunities related to the field of nursing.
  • Maintains liaison between area high schools, middle-colleges, and two- / four-year college counterparts and leads in the establishment of articulation and transfer agreements in the area of nursing education.

Works with Educational Advocates, Student Success Coordinators, and others on recruitment activities and initiatives to promote student success and retention.

  • Coordinates and chairs regular activities of the Nursing Advisory Committee, updating membership as needed.
  • Reports student complaints and potential issues to the Division Dean in a timely manner. Holds students accountable to the college’s code of conduct and course / program policies.

Facilitates discipline according to policy. Handles and forwards student appeals according to published procedures.

  • Establishes and maintains a climate that encourages the professional development of nursing faculty, the retention of highly qualified and competent faculty and staff, and a high level of morale, collaboration, and cooperation within the division.
  • In cooperation with program faculty and staff, develops, modifies, implements, enforces, and evaluates program policies and procedures.

Facilitates regular review of student handbooks and monitors student compliance.

Remains current in all rules and requirements of external licensing, accreditation, and regulatory agencies. Facilitates accurate reporting required by governing organizations and oversees site visits requisite to maintaining approval and accreditation compliance.

Manages activities related to national nursing accreditation compliance and state board approval, including compilation of required and / or annual, self-study, and follow-up reports, distribution and compilation of required survey data, preparation for site visits, and serves as the main contact for communications between the nursing programs and regulatory bodies.

  • Facilitates the organization of the college’s Nursing Forum every two years, arranging for current and appropriate presentations.
  • Participates in commencement, graduation, and nursing pinning ceremonies
  • Represents the college and department in external advisory committees and panels in collaboration with program partners.
  • Coordinates activities with various internal and external stakeholders to accomplish the mission and vision of the college.
  • Facilitates a work environment that encourages knowledge of, respect for, and development of skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.

  • Other duties utilizing similar skills and abilities, related to the accomplishment of the essential functions of this job, may be assigned.

Requirements

Master’s degree in Nursing; active and unencumbered RN license for the state of Michigan; minimum 4 years of experience in the practice of nursing as a registered nurse;

teaching experience in a professional nursing program; supervisory experience required.

Preferred : Five years of professional and teaching experience in a community college; experience with clinical coordination;

accreditation experience.

Supplemental Information

Supervisory Responsibilities

Supervises approximately 10 full-time faculty and staff as well as approximately 25 clinical / lab nursing adjuncts in the Health Sciences Division.

Executes supervisory responsibilities in accordance with applicable laws and the organization's policies, which includes the Code of Ethics.

Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance;

rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.

Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts by addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Ability to apply concepts of fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions, and basic algebra and geometry to practical situations.

Ability to conceptualize fundamentals of probability and statistical inference.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Contact Management systems; Database software;

Internet software; Spreadsheet software and Word Processing software.
