Description
This position reports directly to the TRIO McNair Program Director and is a grant funded position. The Graduate Project Assistant (GPA) will consult regularly with the director on the needs and progress of the Scholars.
The GPA will have key duties that will work closely with the director to ensure students meet their benchmarks for McNair and facilitate the process for research, scholarly activity, and graduate school preparation.
The GPA must be a currently enrolled Iona University graduate student.
Primary Responsibilities :
- Coordinating the workshops and seminars focusing on research methods and communication;
- Collecting, reviewing, and providing feedback for McNair Scholars on documents in preparation for graduate and funding applications;
- Serving as a one-on-one mentor for Scholars;
- Updating and maintaining the McNair webpage and handbooks;
- Preparing and publishing the McNair newsletter and other print materials.
- The GPA will be a full-time graduate student in a graduate program at Iona University
- Preferred : McNair Alumni or graduate student at Iona University. Working on a research-based program / discipline.
- Ability to work as a member of a team and individually.
- Strong intercultural communication skills, including written and verbal communication.
- Ability to mentor low-income, first-generation and underrepresented students or success in doctoral programs;
- Experience tutoring or mentoring or student academic leadership
- Must have excellent writing and ability to guide students in the terminology of research and assist with advisement and graduate school preparation.
- Understand the LI, FG, and UR needs and provide guidance and activities for effective aspirations for doctoral study.
- Provide assistance, guidance, and workshop on researching opportunities for Scholars' professional development, as well as graduate funding
- Must have the ability to motivate the scholars to pursue graduate education.
