Reporting to : Manager of Education and School Initiatives

HistoryMiami Museum Educators are valued staff representing their individual communities and the wider South Florida region.

They may be emerging museum professionals, hoping to learn more about how museums can serve a community, or former teachers and other professionals who wish to share their lived experience with new audiences.

Museum Educators create a highly positive experience for museum visitors who are diverse in their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual identity, abilities and class while in our galleries, at the front desk and during programs and events.

Museum Educators create a welcoming atmosphere for the visitor that encourages repeat visitation, support for the Museums mission through membership, and a positive view of the Museum that will be shared with family, friends and neighbors.

Doing the job means :

  • Arriving on time and in uniform.
  • Creating a welcoming space for all visitors by answering questions, sharing stories about the cultural heritage of Miami and maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of displays and exhibits.
  • Demonstrating effective communication skills in front of diverse groups that include children, families, students, seniors and community stakeholders.
  • Leading socially conscience and culturally relevant tours in an engaging manner by centering students’ needs and utilizing inquiry and object based learning.
  • Accommodating the needs of diverse visitors and assisting with the physical set-up, delivery and breakdown of public programs, member events and rentals.
  • Accurately and efficiently handling cash and credit card transactions using a point of sale system.
  • Collecting and accurately recording visitor and membership data.
  • Answering the telephone in a friendly manner, efficiently routing calls and answering general inquiries.
  • Representing the Museum and our community as a museum ambassador at local outreach events.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities hosted by HistoryMiami Museum and partner organizations.
  • Being motivated to learn and to assist others in their own learning.
  • Assisting with other duties and special projects as assigned by Manager.

To do this job well you will have :

  • Relevant experience in previous jobs, coursework, internships and volunteer work or a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in a relevant subject area.
  • A cool, calm, pleasant demeanor that encourages conversation and engagement from the Museum visitor.
  • Access to email and a valid driver’s license.
  • A flexible schedule that includes one full weekend day and being available at least 24 hours a week. Evenings are a major plus.
  • Confidence working outdoors in the elements, with heights and enclosed spaces and the ability to stand for extended periods of time.

We are also looking for folks who are :

  • Bilingual (English / Spanish, English / Haitian Creole and / or American Sign Language preferred).
  • Proficient with computers / Windows, and cash handling.
  • Interested in online learning using virtual meeting applications.

Hourly wages breakdown :

  • There is a 3-month paid probationary period.
  • The base rate for all duties (including at off-site locations and during special events) is $15 / hour.
