JOB DESCRIPTION
TITLE : Academic Support Technician
FLSA : Non-Exempt
SUMMARY :
The job of Academic Support Technician is to provide students with instructional assistance under the guidance of a classroom teacher, instructional coach or school lead interventionist.
The school level administration will designate the teacher, instructional coach, or lead interventionist as the overseer of the position.
This Academic Support Position will include working in classroom, small group settings or working alongside the school interventionist to provide literacy or math instruction based on student need.
The position may include working with various levels of proficiency to allow the classroom teacher to work with students needing more specialized instruction.
The position may include working with some small groups of students needing assistance or a small group of students that work more independently needing supervision or limited feedback.
The Academic Support Technician position may include monitoring the progress of the students and identifying those who are not progressing.
The Academic Support Technician will be a member of a collaborative team working toward increasing student achievement.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Collaborate with all school staff and administration.
- Adhere to the ethical standards, established rules and regulations of Spartanburg School District Two, as well as the state of South Carolina.
- Assist teachers in building a solid educational foundation for children.
- Ability to meet demands from several people and communicate effectively.
- Should be actively involved with children 85% of the time.
- Should spend a minimal amount of time on non-instructional duties. These tasks should be completed during planning periods or after school.
- Help teachers in maintaining an academically engaged classroom.
- Work with various groups (those that finish early, an individual that needs to be removed from the group, those needing to make up assignments).
- Maintain a positive attitude and help to build a positive school culture.
- Maintain confidentiality. Any student information regarding performance, achievement or behavior is confidential information.
- Maintain confidentiality regarding other employees of the school. If the AST has concerns about a colleague he / she should report the concern to school level administration.
- Assists the teacher in implementing instructional plans. This can include providing support while the teacher is providing instruction, giving lessons independently when the teacher is unavailable and providing small group tutoring to students who need additional assistance.
- Provide strong academic support for assigned small groups / individual students to ensure instruction is differentiated based on student need.
- Support classroom teachers through observing the student and collecting data in the school setting.
- Other duties as assigned.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS
Education and Experience :
- Some experience working with students in an educational setting
- High school diploma
- Higher education preferred (2-year degree or bachelor degree)

Salary Range : $20 - $30 Per Hour (2 Year Grant Funded)
