The primary duties of a Bridge Engineer / Inspection Team Leader are performing and participating in bridge safety condition inspections of in-service highway / transit / rail bridges / aerial structures and ancillary structures in accordance with highway / transit / rail agency requirements, FHWA National Bridge Inspection Standards, FTA, and / or FRA Standards.
Bridge condition inspection activities will also include planning, scheduling, securing access equipment, identifying and procuring maintenance of traffic services, agency coordination of inspection activities, and preparing detailed inspection reports.
A successful candidate will also have experience in structural design, structural capacity analysis (load ratings), and structure rehabilitation (highway / transit / rail bridges).
This position can be in our Fairfax, VA, Washington, DC, or Baltimore, MD office.
What You Will Do
- Perform highway / transit / rail bridge / structure condition inspections.
- Develop bridge condition inspection reports with effective repair / rehabilitation recommendations.
- Coordinate field activity, access equipment, and MOT for inspections.
- Perform or check structural load capacity rating analyses for highway / transit / rail bridges.
- Review existing bridge / structure plans to identify critical elements, details, fracture critical members, and structural load paths.
- Assist with inspection coordination and analysis activities.
Minimum Qualifications
- Desired but not required :
- Licensed Professional Engineer (PE)
- Qualified Inspection Team Leader (TL)
- Minimum 5-years bridge inspection experience.
- OSHA 30-hour training for Construction
- Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering (BSCE) with emphasis in structures.
- Minimum 8 years of bridge inspection experience if not a PE.
- Minimum 12 years of bridge inspection experience if without a BSCE.
- Certified Bridge Inspector meeting the requirements as defined by FHWA (NBIS)
- Successful completion of the Safety Inspection of In-Service Bridges (NHI Course 130055) or FHWA-approved comprehensive bridge inspection training course, and the Bridge Inspection Techniques for Nonredundant Steel Tension Members (NSTM) (NHI Course 130078).
- OSHA 10-hour Road Construction training
- Proficient with use of under bridge access equipment MEWPS (boom lifts, bucket trucks, snoopers,
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work in a team environment, self-starter, demonstrated organization skills, team player, and commitment to continuous improvement.
- Must have the physical abilities to transverse steep embankments, work at heights and in confined spaces, climbing, carrying ladders and gear, work in adverse weather conditions, etc.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license.
