An Automotive Sales Consultant, also known as an Automotive Salesperson or Auto Sales Representative, sells cars, trucks and other vehicles to commercial, government and private clients.
The responsibilities of Auto Sales Consultants include communicating with customers, discussing their needs, persuading them to buy the right vehicle for these needs and promoting sales offers as they arise.
These consultants also give potential customers test drives and coordinate financing.
Automotive Sales Consultant duties and responsibilities
Competent Automotive Sales Consultants are charged with making potential customers feel like they're being listened to and that their needs are being considered.
These consultants also need to communicate effectively and convincingly when persuading customers of the benefits of buying a certain type of vehicle.
Their main duties include :
- Meeting and greeting customers who enter the sales lot or dealership in a welcoming and helpful way
- Answering general and detailed questions about particular vehicles and the financial aspects of buying them
- Helping customers become familiar with the cars they’re interested in by offering test drives and explaining technical details and specific legal or financial requirements
- Helping customers sort out and process their financing and purchase options based on their specific situation
- Persuading customers to buy a vehicle in a way that leaves them feeling good about their choice
- Making sure the cars on display are in good order and well cared for
Automotive Sales Consultant skills and qualifications
A qualified and effective Automotive Sales Consultant needs good industry knowledge and an assortment of communication and other soft skills to do their job effectively. These include :
- Strong knowledge of sales and persuasion techniques coupled with excellent knowledge of the products
- Superb communication and customer attention skills that help build rapport and persuade
- Intuition about customer desires and practical needs
- Strong knowledge about their industry and the general requirements of different customer types (commercial versus personal, for example)
- Precise written communication abilities for forming contracts and agreements
- Strong negotiation skills for managing the back and forth of a sale agreement on expensive products
- Solid experience ith writing sales contracts, handling transactions and organizing sale financing
Automotive Sales Consultant experience requirements
An Automotive Sales Consultant should have previous sales experience when entering a starting position in a car dealership.
Previous sales education and training would also be a definite bonus. Because the sales business runs on the metrics of successful deals, a consultant who has been working for several years should have a track record of effective closes and strong sales abilities.
In the case of candidates for jobs in specialty motor dealerships, such as those selling industrial trucks or sports vehicles, experience in the related vehicle industry is an ideal quality.
