Founded in 2018 by The Honorable Anthony Tony Coelho, The Coelho Center for Disability Law, Policy, and Innovation ( The Coelho Center ) collaborates with the national and regional disability community to cultivate leadership and advocate for systemic approaches to advance the lives of people with disabilities.

By convening advocates and scholarly experts from the disability community; leading capacity building activities that serve the disability community;

and generating impactful advocacy and knowledge-building, The Coelho Center contributes to legal and social change for disabled people.

The Coelho Center takes an intersectional approach to interacting systems of oppression (i.e., racism and ableism), promoting leadership by the multiply marginalized and prioritizing work not traditionally attended to by the Disability Rights Movement.

Housed at Loyola Marymount University (LMU), The Coelho Center is both an internal and external facing institute, providing programming and development for the LMU community and the community at large.

The Coelho Center’s foundational initiatives focus on educational justice, including identifying, training, and providing scholarships to disabled student leaders, and increasing the pathway of students with disabilities going to law school and the legal profession.

Toward this end, the Assistant Director will work with students with disabilities (kindergarten through graduate school) and early professionals from across the nation and internationally.

Reporting to the Director of The Coelho Center, the Assistant Director will oversee the administration and expansion of The Coelho Law Fellowship Program (CLFP), The Coelho Law Fellowship Alumni Program (AP), and additional Coelho Center programs, convenings, and reports.

  • Duties will include : overseeing each annual CLFP cohort (50 students / year); organizing and facilitating CLFP events and seminars;
  • expanding AP programs for CLFP graduates; supporting additional LMU- and community-focused Coelho Center convenings, reports, and events;

and assisting the Director in the overall administration of the Center, including but not limited to the areas of fundraising, marketing, social media, and website development.

Position Specific Responsibilities

Creation and Development of Educational Programming

  • Develop and expand CLFP and AP programming.
  • Develop and coordinate the review and selection process for the CLFP and AP participants.
  • Develop and manage the advertisement and application process of CLFP program to attain a high volume of applicants from diverse backgrounds.
  • Develop and execute assessments and produce reports of the CLFP and AP programs.

Student Advising and Mentoring

  • Identify and compile resources for students with disabilities, including scholarship, internship and employment opportunities and educational and disability rights legal resources.
  • Advise CLFP and AP participants on educational and professional pathways, including connecting students with resources.
  • Develop mentorship opportunities and programming for CLFP and AP participants.
  • Coordinate trainings for students and their parents, guardians and advocates, including rights regarding educational accommodations.

Logistics and Operations

  • Coordinate logistics for events including scheduling meetings, flights, hotels, event space, catering, registration, access needs, photography, media, volunteers, event staffing, pre and post surveys, and event materials.
  • Organize logistics for CLFP fellows, AP participants, including coordinating : meetings / webinars, guest speakers, access needs, homework and exam submissions, stipends, certificates, mentors, surveys, and website and media.

Communications and Outreach

  • Develop newsletters, media, social media, publicity, and web content for the CLFP and AP programs.
  • Represent The Coelho Center at LMU and external events and committees related to disability rights, education and increasing the pathway of students and young professionals with disabilities.
  • Promoting research and assessment findings of CLFP and AP programs.

Budget

  • Assist in planning of the CLFP and AP program budgets and expenditures.
  • Manage the CLFP and AP program budget, including budgetary tracking and working with the Office of Financial Aid to ensure distribution of stipends and awards.
  • Assist The Coelho Center Director with the creation and dissemination of year-end reports.
  • Assist The Coelho Center Director with identification of grant opportunities and the drafting of grant proposals.

  • Work with The Coelho Center Director to ensure that the Center’s goals and mission are met.

Requisite Qualifications

  • Typically, a Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience. Master's preferred. Incumbent will be expected to continue upgrading knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to stay abreast of disability rights in education and educational and professional pathway programming.
  • Minimum of three years working with a non-profit or institution of higher education, or relevant experience, including program planning, implementation, evaluation, and sustainability.
  • Experience with an educational pathway program, internship, fellowship, or similar programming (as a program administrator and / or highly engaged participant experience) is preferred.
  • Experience working with interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary groups including from academia, non-profit, local, state and / or federal agencies, policy coalitions, and grassroot community organizations is desirable.
  • Demonstrated understanding of intersectionality / intersectional justice and experience working with and promoting diverse participants and leadership development is essential.
  • Experience in situations requiring keen judgment and discretion.
  • Experience with program, conference and event planning, implementation, evaluation, and sustainability, including budget coordination, is preferred.
  • Experience in grant proposal writing is desirable.
  • Highly developed organizational skills; exceptional personal initiative and attention to detail.
  • Exemplary communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to multi-task.
