The CNM is a DOE Office of Science user facility that provides researchers from across the globe with world-class expertise and instrumentation for multidisciplinary nanoscience and nanotechnology research.

All research and tools are designed to support cutting-edge staff and user science.

The candidate will be responsible for two areas of equal emphasis, following a 50 / 50 model of time commitment both to staff-led science and user research.

The first area will be developing a world-leading experimental program based on harnessing the capabilities of advanced electron microscopy techniques with an emphasis on time resolved and in situ methods aligned with CNM strategic scientific directions.

Potential research areas include, but are not limited to, systems for sustainable energy harvesting, storage, transduction, or catalysis, as well as novel microelectronics or quantum information sciences.

The second area is providing scientific and technical support of user experiments and capability development at CNM. The prospective researcher will carry out basic research to both advance CNM research and to enable discoveries engaging a diverse external user community for collaborative research.

Key Responsibilities :

  • Develop and lead an experimental program utilizing advanced electron microscopy techniques, particularly in situ, time resolved and CL / PL spectromicroscopy methods
  • Conduct operando imaging and analysis for research areas such as sustainable energy systems, catalysis, microelectronics, and quantum information sciences.
  • Provide scientific and technical support for user experiments, ensuring successful execution and development of user-led research projects.
  • Collaborate with internal and external researchers to drive innovation and discoveries in nanoscience and nanotechnology.
  • Contribute to the advancement of CNM's strategic scientific directions through pioneering research and development.

Position Requirements

  • Extensive experience with advanced electron microscopy techniques and large dataset analysis for materials research
  • Demonstrated proficiency within situ and / or time resolved TEM techniques
  • Ability to perform and analyze quantitative 4DSTEM and electron ptychography experiments
  • Proven track record of research in areas such as energy systems, catalysis, microelectronics, or quantum information sciences.
  • Strong ability to collaborate with a diverse research community and provide scientific guidance.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Ability to model Argonne’s core values of impact, safety, respect, integrity, and teamwork.
  • Interested candidates should submit with their application;
  • Cover Letter; detailing how your experience and expertise will contribute to success in this position.
  • Detailed curriculum vitae; including a list of publications and the names and addresses of three professional references,
  • 2-page statement on proposed research
  • 1-page statement regarding their approach to engage and grow the scientific user program including a diversity-equity-inclusion strategy.
