Job Description :

The School of Music in the College of the Arts seeks an Assistant Professor in Music Education with a specialty in instrumental music education.

The successful candidate will specialize in secondary instrumental music education and join an active team of music teacher educators and researchers who seek to expand the possibilities for music education.

Responsibilities :

  • Teach instrumental and secondary-focused undergraduate music education classes, and other undergraduate and graduate music education classes based on candidate expertise and program needs.
  • Observe and supervise student teachers.
  • Chair graduate student thesis and dissertation committees.
  • Maintain an active national scholarly profile in areas of specialization, consistent with the expectation of tenure and promotion.
  • Actively engage with the K- music education community across the state of Florida.
  • Participate in shared governance through service to the School, College, and University.

SCHOOL OF MUSIC : Organized within the College of the Arts, the School of Music plays an important role in the academic and cultural life of the University, the College’s Creative Campus initiative and the community.

The School has full-time and nine adjunct faculty, serving some graduate and undergraduate music majors. Degree programs include B.

A., B.M., M.M., D.M.A., and the Ph.D. in music education, composition, ethnomusicology, and historical musicology. Program emphases include performance, music education, theory, composition, music history and literature, ethnomusicology, conducting, and sacred music.

The School of Music is also home to the UF Bands program, which includes The Pride of the Sunshine Gator Marching Band. School of Music facilities include the School of Music Building and Steinbrenner Band Hall, among others.

Minimum Requirements :

The successful candidate must meet all of the following :

  • PhD (or equivalent) in music education.
  • At least three years of successful instrumental music teaching experience in K- school settings.

Preferred Qualifications :

The successful candidate will meet some of the following :

  • Teaching experience beyond the graduate assistantship at the university level, ideally as instructor of record for undergraduate and / or graduate courses.
  • Experience in sound before sign pedagogies for instrumental music learning, culturally responsive teaching, Understanding by Design, and / or Universal Design for Learning.
  • Knowledge of and experience in teaching modern band, arranging and composition, music theory, and / or music technology within the context of a music education course.
  • Demonstrated record of scholarship including publications, conference presentations, and other appropriate activities.
  • Demonstrated capacity for effective engagement in recruitment.
  • Interest in online teaching and learning.
  • Specialized pedagogical content knowledge of teaching string and / or band instruments in a K- setting.

Collegiate teaching experience, including work as a graduate teaching assistant and / or instructor of record.

  • Potential for scholarly achievement in the field at a national level, in alignment with the unit’s tenure and promotion criteria.
  • Evidence of successful collaboration and collegiality with faculty, students, and staff.
  • Evidence of skill in designing and facilitating academic work that advances curiosity, inclusion, open intellectual discourse.
