FUNCTION :

The High School Choir Director works under the direct supervision of the principal. With the approval of the principal and under the guidance of the Office of Humanities Specialist for choir, the High School Choir Director is responsible for determining and implementing the campus choral music program and related activities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES & REQUIREMENTS :

Teacher Duties

• Plans for successful student learning of daily objectives that include basic knowledge and skills, and central concepts of the discipline.
• Ensures students are engaged and successful in learning, critical thinking and problem solving.
• Utilizes multiple models of instruction, assessment and effective teaching practices.
• Utilizes State TEKS and District Curriculum to design engaging lessons which are challenging, high quality and appropriate for the level of instruction.
• Maintains current accurate records of daily attendance and textbooks issued.
• Able to effectively manage time and materials.
• Accepts related assignments as requested by principals.
• Instructs classes in the subject area(s) assigned.
• Is responsible for the use and care of available instructional materials.
• Maintains current records of student grades and progress.
• Accurately evaluates and assesses performance of students in subject / s taught.
• Confers regularly with parents on student progress.
• Fulfills related responsibilities, e.g., reporting grades, exams, field trips, and programs.
• Maintains classroom discipline that allows for student learning, safety and teaches individual responsibility.
• Analyzes data and information from assessments and utilizes it for individualizing instruction.

August

• Organizes uniforms and equipment, and arranges cleaning and repair of items.
• Plans and outlines activities for school year.
• Confirms team-teaching schedule with feeder middle schools.
• Attends Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Region XIV fall meeting.
• Schedules choir concerts and programs on high school's master calendar.
• Prepares a calendar of choir activities to distribute to students, parents, and school administration.
• Selects music and instructional materials for use during school year.
• Meets with other District secondary choir directors to discuss and plan a Holiday Concert of combined secondary choirs.
• Plans and prepares performance materials for a fall concert.
• Meets with feeder middle school choir directors to plan a fall or spring feeder school choir concert.
• Plans and prepares for TMEA choir auditions.
• Assists students in preparation for All-District Choir auditions.
• Prepares a musical program with vocal ensemble group for presentation at fall concert and to various civic groups.

September / October / November

• Requests funding to attend TMEA Conference in February.
• Assists students in preparation for All-Region and Area Candidate Choir auditions.
• Participates in All-Region and Area Choir competitions, as well as Middle School Region Choir auditions.
• Assists students in preparation for All-Region Choir Clinic and Concert.
• Participates in All-Region Choir Clinic and Concert.
• Plans and begins preparation for winter choir concert.
• Plans and begins preparation for holiday program for show choir.
• Schedules holiday performances of choral groups.
• Directs fall choir concert and feeder school choir concert.
• Directs show choir performances for civic groups, etc.
• Begins music selection for UIL Concert and Sight reading Contest.

December

• Participates in District's Secondary School Choir Holiday Concert.
• Performs winterholiday choir concert or program.
• Assists students in preparation for All-State Choir auditions.
• Assists students in selection of appropriate solo and ensemble contest music.
• Prepares recordings of solo accompaniments for student practice.
• Directs choir and vocal ensemble performances for community groups as scheduled.
• Begins making contacts in feeder middle schools to recruit students for high school choir program.

January

• Participates in All-State Choir auditions, if applicable.
• Assists students in preparation of solo and ensemble contest music.
• Selects music for spring choir concert.
• Finalizes music selection for UIL Concert and Sight reading Contest.
• Plans and prepares a vocal ensemble spring program to perform for community groups and middle schools.
• Participates in District's Middle School Solo and Ensemble contest.
• Continues recruiting in middle schools.
• Meets with feeder middle school choir directors to plan a spring feeder school choir concert or other feeder school activity.

February

• Continues preparing students for UIL Solo and Ensemble competition.
• Attends TMEA Convention, if possible. Attendance is required if students are participating in All-State Choir.
• Participates in UIL Solo and Ensemble Contest.
• Continues recruiting in middle schools.
• Works actively on concert and sight reading contest materials.
• Participates in Secondary Choir Concert Showcase.

March / April

• Participates in UIL Concert and Sight reading Contest.
• Participates in other music competitions, if applicable. (See note.)
• Presents a spring feeder school choir concert, if applicable.
• Prepares a spring choir concert.
• Assists students in preparation for State Solo and Ensemble Contest, if applicable.
• Presents spring choir concert.
• Attends TMEA Region XIV spring meeting.
• Prepares and directs choir performance for high school graduation.
• Maintains inventory of choir equipment, uniforms and music.
• Arranges for repair and safe storage of equipment for summer.
• Participates in UIL Texas State Solo and Ensemble Contest, if applicable.
• NOTE : Participation in all UIL, TMEA, and District-sponsored choir contests and events is expected. Participation is defined as (a) entering students in event, as applicable;

and (b) assisting in supervision, administration, or adjudication as assigned by contest or event chairperson. Other contests are entered on a voluntary basis depending on desire and ability of group.

CONTINUING DUTIES

• Maintains responsibility for audition and placement of students in choir program, and communicates results to all persons concerned.
• Coaches vocal students who participate in Applied Music Program, and sets up recitals at which those students may be judged in order to receive credit.
• Makes arrangements for repair, maintenance, and inventory of school-owned uniforms and equipment assigned to choir.
• Maintains care, upkeep, and cataloging of choral music library.
• Coordinates, with cooperation of principals involved, team-teaching with choir directors of feeder middle schools in order to encourage a sequential program of music education.
• Teaches sight reading, music theory, and performance skills as provided in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for choral music.

Cultivates a learning environment in which students develop an appreciation of their performances and performances of others.

• Prepares and issues a student handbook on choir policies, regulations, and procedures.
• Handbook must be congruent with policies, rules, and regulations of the District. Choir handbook must be approved by principal prior to student distribution.

Handbook requires parent and student signatures to indicate understanding and acceptance of choir policies, regulations, and procedures.

Handbook includes all aspects of the high school's choir program.

• Attends all meetings called during the year by Office of Humanities Specialist for choir area.
• In order to accomplish designated duties, spends approximately two hours or more of extra time before or after school in daily preparation or student rehearsals as needed.
• Approximately ten (10) Saturdays are required to cover TMEA auditions and performances, high school clinics and performances, Solo and Ensemble Contest, and regional meetings.
• Supplementary pay has been included in High School Choir Director's salary as compensation for extra time spent in daily preparation;

time spent in auditions, rehearsals, and performances outside school day; and time spent in attendance at District music meetings.

Performs other job-related duties as assigned by principal.

Working Conditions :

Ability to receive information and / or instruction from internal / external customers through spoken expression.

Ability to convey information and / or instruction to internal / external customers through spoken expression.

Ability to perform work while standing and / or walking for extended periods, up to eight (8) hours a day.
