EZ-ACCESS, a division of Homecare Products, Inc. specializes in the design, manufacturing and marketing of quality portable and modular ramps and personal care accessories to the health care industry.
We currently have an immediate opening for a Director of Engineering to join our Operations team. This position leads and directs the activities of the Product Engineering and R&D departments and supervises a group of technical professionals who perform engineering, design, testing, and configuration activities.
Sets engineering policies and procedures, and optimizes the engineering organizational structure for optimal workflows, quality, efficiency, and risk management.
Identifies new product ideas, creates designs for new products or modification of existing products, including product line extensions.
Guides the selection and testing of materials, components, and configurations. Works directly with customers on new designs and / or product launches.
Role requires a unique blend of hands-on engineering, leadership, and strategic thinking.
Duties :
- Duties associated with this position will include mechanical engineering, electrical design, R&D and other associated engineering tasks and related activities.
- Manages and tracks all new product designs, working closely with Procurement, Manufacturing, and the Commercial team throughout the NPI process.
- Reviews legacy product designs and recommends alternative materials, manufacturing processes, or configurations for cost reduction.
- Evaluates current CAD, PLM, PDM, revision control, and configuration management processes and software against current / future company needs, recommending improvements, and implementing them.
- Establishes standards for engineering drawings, product instructions, and related documentation.
- Writes processes, procedures and introduces forms as needed to better serve the needs of the department and the company.
- Designs and implements an organizational structure to cost-effectively meet the needs of all stakeholders.
- Manages department performance, capabilities, capacity, and priorities.
- Coaches, mentors and trains personnel as needed.
- Conducts performance appraisals and reviews of subordinate staff.
- Hires and fires in accordance with company guidelines.
- May be involved with customer service to resolve product or installation issues.
- Researches IBC codes and other related codes as needed to ensure that all product lines meet agency and governmental standards.
- Reviews all engineering designs for quality, accuracy and completeness.
QUALIFICATIONS :

EDUCATION and / or EXPERIENCE :
- Typically requires a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering, or equivalent.
- Minimum five years of relevant experience in a metals-based manufacturing company.
- Minimum three years of experience as a mechanical design engineer and two years in an engineering leadership role.
- Demonstrated knowledge of general manufacturing processes (machining, cutting, welding, assembly, extrusion, die casting).
- Demonstrated knowledge of mechanical design and engineering best practices.
LANGUAGE SKILLS :
- Ability to create, read and interpret documents and drawings.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to speak effectively with groups of customers or employees of organization.
- Ability to read, write, and speak English.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS :
- Ability to calculate figures.
- Ability to apply concepts of engineering standards.
REASONING ABILITY :
- Requires substantial ability to evaluate problems, situations and opportunities and select appropriate form of action.
- Must be able to understand corporate Mission, Vision, Values and Objectives, Strategies and Goals and communicate those to department to achieve results.
COMPUTER SKILLS :
- Experienced with Microsoft Office products, Solid Works, and CAD software.
- Strong working knowledge of ERP / MRP processes; Great Plains experience a plus but not required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS :
- Ability to listen, hear and comprehend.
- Ability to see, read, comprehend, and assess complex situations.
- Ability to sit at a desk and function in cubed office environment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT :
- Typical manufacturing environment with changes in temperature due to location of work to be performed.
- Fast paced, multitasking environment.
- Use of personal protective equipment may be required.
