Founded in 1971, Social Advocates for Youth San Diego ( SAY San Diego ) has advanced opportunity, equity and well-being for children, families, and communities throughout San Diego County for over 50 years.

The organization has evolved from a $1,500 grassroots initiative to a $30 million organization, serving 30,000 San Diegans annually through 30+ programs.

SAY San Diego’s programs help youth, adults, families and communities to reach their full potential by focusing on three key areas :

Child and youth development : Provides early home visiting, preschools, and before and after school programs across more than 45 sites.

Youth, adult, and family wellness : Offers child abuse prevention, foster care support, mental health counseling, healthcare and housing navigation, and case management.

Community engagement : Involves community organizing, coalition building and multi-service family resource centers, supporting the military, refugee, and economically insecure families.

SAY San Diego emphasizes eco-system support, by serving individuals in the context of their family and community life. SAY San Diego is also well known for its focus on preventing harm and hardship, and engaging community members in building community solutions including refugee and asylee community members, military families, LGBTQ+ communities, and culturally, racially, linguistically, and economically diverse communities.

THE POSITION

SAY San Diego is in search of a visionary, strategic, impact-focused, and mission-driven leader to be its next CEO. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO will provide strategic direction and leadership by articulating a clear vision, reinforcing organizational culture, setting goals, and empowering the executive management team.

Casting the Vision : The CEO will lead with an inclusive vision that inspires and motivates SAY San Diego’s workforce and constituents.

They will collaborate to address the needs of children, families, and communities, developing a vivid picture of a better future and a collective commitment to achieving operational, programmatic, and revenue-generating goals.

Setting the Strategy : The CEO will partner with the Board and the executive management team to enhance organizational effectiveness and ensure financial sustainability and growth in a complex environment.

Building the Community : The CEO will foster a culture of service, engagement, and learning, emphasizing equity, diversity, and inclusion.

They will maintain and expand networks with key community stakeholders and serve as an influential ambassador and advocate for SAY San Diego.

QUALIFICATIONS

Extensive leadership experience and expertise in human services, including child and youth development, healthcare, community organizing, mental and behavioral health services, social justice, and social determinants of health.

Backgrounds from various sectors such as nonprofit, government, education, social enterprise, and public policy will be considered.

Wisdom and prudence in the deployment of financial resources, with sufficient fiscal management experience to be conversant with the fiduciary responsibilities of a complex organization.

Familiarity with the process and accountability required for government funding is strongly preferred.

Demonstrated successful experience in fundraising, strategic planning, and board relations will be highly valued.

An advanced degree in social work, human services management, public administration, nonprofit management, or a related field is preferred.

Alternatively, a demonstrated successful history serving in a senior leadership position in a complex human services organization recognized for their commitment to exemplary service to the community and clients will be considered of equivalent value to a degree.

COMPENSATION & ADDITIONAL CONSIDERATIONS

The annual salary range for this position is $240,000 to $270,000. Relocation assistance, if needed, is negotiable. A comprehensive and competitive benefits package will be provided.

The CEO is expected to have a regular presence in the office and be available for frequent in-person meetings with staff, board members, donors, and community members.
