Job Summary :
As an Community Facilitator (Environmental Science Specialist 2-3) for the Office of Community and Intergovernmental Engagement (OCIE), your main responsibility is to bridge the communication between the public and our agency by building and nurturing relationships with local government officials, community members, and stakeholders in counties throughout Arizona in a capacity facilitating community meetings.
Additionally, you will be a technical and regulatory resource for staff, stakeholders, customers, and the general public.
This position may be available for remote work within Arizona (1-2 days per week in the office / hoteling).

Job Duties :
The Community Facilitator function will require residing within the Phoenix metropolitan area and working with OCIE staff to produce best outcomes for Arizonans.
You will listen and learn about community issues, coordinate problem-solving meetings both internally and externally, advocate for solutions for the community’s needs, and resolve environmental concerns as applicable.
Having a deep understanding of at least one of ADEQ’s main divisions (air, water, waste) will help you to explain complicated environmental regulations to the community and how these regulations protect the community and the environment.
You will be the link between the community needs and ADEQ programs, facilitate conversations in potentially charged circumstances, interact with the public, and assist with solutions.
You will need to travel for this position throughout Arizona up to 3-4 times per month to meet the community where they are as ADEQ educates and engages about the regulatory process.
An understanding of outreach methods and principles will be needed in this position. You will need excellent time and project management skills.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSAs) :
- Self-motivated with a service orientation and ability to remain neutral in charged situations.
- Good communication skills. The ability to communicate in Spanish is helpful but not required.
- Proficient Knowledge with the Google platform.
- Good problem-solving skills.
- Ability to cope and adapt to changing priorities, work in a fast-paced environment, and under frequently stressful conditions.
- Ability to have good time management and organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines.
- Ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
Selective Preference(s) :
- Bachelor’s degree in environmental science / studies / technology, mathematics, statistics, chemistry, or environmental / chemical engineering.
- Level 2 : Requires 2-5 years’ experience
- Level 3 : Requires 5 years’ experience (a Masters degree may substitute for 2 years’ experience, Doctorate 4 years).
- Environmental Professional in Training required for Level 3, or the ability to obtain within a year of hire.
- Field work required for this position
- Valid drivers’ license required (occasional overnight stay).
