Under the leadership of the Chief Operating Officer (COO), the Senior Vice President of Hospital Operations (SVP) is ultimately accountable for the overall administrative and strategic leadership, operating results, and financial performance of three major areas of responsibility across the Mass General Entities :
1. Hospital Capacity Management : The SVP serves as the executive directly responsible for all aspects of Capacity Management.
The SVP will serve as the executive leader, working collaboratively with MGB and MGH leaders including CMO, CNO / ACNOs, Chairs and Chiefs, Case Management and other SVPs for clinical services on hospital-wide initiatives to advance service optimization and integration, enhanced patient experience, and value-based care delivery.
The leader will ensure that length of stay efforts, longitudinal patient flow, quality improvement, workforce management, care model innovation, and capital planning are all managed in a coordinated and effective manner.
Works closely with colleagues at BWH / BWPO as well as MGB to ensure optimization of enterprise assets, specifically, coordinates with EAM, PTAC, CCM, and Home Hospital on high priority system-wide capacity and throughput-related initiatives.
2. Surgical and Procedural Services : The SVP serves as the executive directly responsible for all aspects of Peri-Operatives and Procedural Services across the MGH.
Collectively, these sites perform 58,000 surgical cases annually and 62,000 procedures annually.
The SVP will oversee the team accountable for the overall operations and financial performance of the MGH main campus ORs (58), Danvers ORs (8), Waltham ORs (10), and Perioperative services including the pre-procedure evaluation program, technician services, and central sterile processing and supplies.
S / he will oversee and coordinate the operations and financial performance of the MGH Procedural areas in collaboration with department leadership.
The SVP will also The SVP will work collaboratively with Chairs and Division Chiefs and the other SVPs for clinical services on hospital-wide initiatives to advance service optimization and integration, enhanced patient experience, and value-based care delivery.
The leader will ensure that patient access, operational throughput, quality improvement, workforce management, care model innovation, and capital planning are all managed in a coordinated and effective manner.
3. Support Services : The SVP serves as the executive directly responsible for all support services, including facility operations, buildings & grounds, materials management (and transport), environmental services, environmental health and safety, nutrition and food services across the Mass General Sites.
In doing so, s / he will oversee and collaborate with the MGH VP for Support Services who is responsible for :
- Promoting a safe environment and performing all related responsibilities to the highest of standards.
- Developing and implementing systems to monitor performance against budgets, schedules, and established quality control standards.
- Protecting the interests of the Mass General Sites and Mass General Brigham effectively, and ensuring appropriate controls are in place to guarantee compliance with all financial, regulatory, and safety requirements.
- Overseeing and directing all operating and capital expenditures for space development, consistent with planning and design goals.
- Take a leadership role in the development of annual and multi-year capital budgets, especially those related to construction and development.
In all the previously listed areas, the SVP works in close partnership with the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) and the Chief Nursing Officer (CNO) to ensure coordination and collaboration.
In addition, the SVP is responsible directly, or in partnership with senior leader colleagues for a number of ongoing, broad organizational requirements, including :
- Ensuring that competent, efficient, and coordinated patient care is uniformly provided to patients in ambulatory, inpatient and community settings;
- Ensuring that all educational programs meet institutional and outside regulatory requirements;
- Ensuring that all research initiatives are appropriately supported;
- Directing and developing the organization of services and programs within the scope of responsibility of the SVP;
- Managing all operating and capital budgets for MGH within the purview of the SVP;
- Leading the management team within the SVP’s enterprises toward attainment of identified short- and long-term goals and objectives;
- Advancing MGB’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion;
- Executing strategies and plans designed to achieve MGB’s strategic objectives;
- Collaborating with other institutional leaders to meet MGB strategic goals and objectives; and
- Serving as an institutional leader across the MGH.
Qualifications
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS :
- 10+ years of experience as a leader within an academic medical center.
- Demonstrated track record of successfully leading teams.
- Experience working in a highly matrixed organization / environment strongly preferred.
- Master’s or doctorate degree required.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary to communicate effectively with a large and diverse constituency, including the Chairs, senior departmental leaders, hospital and MGPO leaders and administrative staff, research faculty at all levels, research trainees and staff, representatives of other MGH offices, collaborating institution officials, granting agencies (NIH, industry and foundations), potential donors, representatives, and vendors.
A good command of English language, including medical and scientific terminology, is critical.

WORKING CONDITIONS :
- Attends meetings in and out of hospitals and clinics.May require travel to off-campus locations.
- Is available for early and late meetings and flexible to meet frequent deadlines.Some evening and weekend work will be necessary.
SYSTEM AND FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES :
- Accountable for the budget performance of all accounts within the purview of the position.
- Responsible for managing an effective, efficient team of resources, with stewardship.
- Works within legal, regulatory, compliance, accreditation and ethical practice standards relevant to the position and as established by MGH / MGB.
- Complies with appropriate Mass General and MGB policies and procedures.
