Founded in 2003, Empower DC is known for taking on tough issues and engaging in long-term battles in support of some of the lowest income communities in DC.

Our multi-generational and multi-ethnic base has secured wins in neighborhood-specific and citywide campaigns addressing a range of important issues.

Our work currently centers on advancing equitable development, environmental justice and racial equity through efforts that center directly impacted grassroots leaders who inform the goals and strategies we employ in our efforts.

Position Summary

The Environmental Justice Manager will provide leadership to Empower DC’s environmental justice campaigns, coalition efforts, and capacity building program.

The EJ Manager will also support Empower DC’s staff EJ organizers, providing additional strategic direction and on the ground to support strengthening grassroots campaigns.

Key Responsibilities

Provide strategic direction and on the ground support to Empower DC’s EJ campaigns (such as Shut Down NEP and Justice for Brentwood) and efforts to advance environmental justice policies

Provide direct supervision and support to Empower DC Environmental Justice Organizer

Manage outreach to EJ impacted communities, recruitment of new members, and the development of an EJ Leaders group within the organization

Manage EJ specific projects such as those related to air quality monitoring

Develop materials to support advocacy such as testimony, policy documents, outreach materials, work plans and reports

Work with the DC EJ Coalition Steering Committee to plan for and convene regular meetings of the DC EJ Coalition for the purpose of information sharing, networking and collaboration

Represent Empower DC in the MATCH (Mid-Atlantic Climate Hub) and TC-TAC (Thriving Communities Technical Assistance Centers) and coordinate capacity building and technical assistance programs, including trainings and workshops, to strengthen the local EJ movement.

Qualifications :

Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Effectively able to use Microsoft Office software (e.g. Word, PowerPoint, Excel), as well as Google docs, Doodle, Canva, Zoom, and other commonly used tools

Base level knowledge of Environmental Justice and policy and ability to learn new information quickly, and effectively communicate information to grassroots audiences

Able to work independently and manage time effectively

Familiarity with DC and its communities, organizations and government

Ability to travel throughout the District using personal vehicle or public transportation

Fluency in the Spanish or Amharic is not required but would be beneficial

Benefits :

This is a full-time, exempt level position, eligible for full benefits. Empower DC covers 100% of the costs of health, dental and vision insurance.

Empower DC annually contributes 2.5% of each full-time employee’s salary to a retirement benefit plan. Employees accrue 10 days of vacation leave, 10 days sick leave, two personal days and all federal holidays.

Our office is also closed between Christmas and New Year’s Day. After each five-year anniversary with Empower DC, an employee is entitled to one month of paid leave as a thank you for long-time service, and as a time to refresh and rejuvenate.
