Senior Chemist - Applications/Formulation

Responsibilities :

This position will be responsible for developing creative additive solutions and application testing protocols for various types of coatings applications.

Chemistries include, but not limited to pigment dispersions, industrial defoamers, silicones and polymers.

  • Focus market segments include Architecture coatings, Industrial Coatings (ie concrete, protective, etc), Wood Coatings, Adhesives, Construction, Graphics Arts, etc.
  • This role is highly formulation and applications focused by developing starting point formulations (ie similar to end-customer formulations) for target customers
  • Benchmarking and internal prototype development utilizing testing protocols and equipment stated by the customer to properly measure achievement of desired outcome(s).

Develop product designs and test for specific market segment unmet needs.

  • Have full knowledge of lab equipment and application test methods by market segment
  • Design and carry out required lab experiments to assess initial feasibility through final process optimization, application testing and shelf-life studies.

Maintain a neat and accurate notebook of all experimental data.

  • Prepare customer facing communication materials / presentations for existing and new product launches and to support technical service requests.
  • Complete periodic project status reports and closeout summaries.
  • Define the required product / raw material specifications and work with QC on test method development and manufacturing on operating procedures for scale up
  • Assist with production trouble shooting and investigation of customer quality complaints as needed. Candidate should be able to write in details the manufacturing and the quality process.
  • Conduct literature searches as required to review technical and patent issues.
  • Work closely with sales team, customers and the market in general to stay abreast of common segment unmet needs; monitor technical publications for major scientific / business trends.

Requirements :

  • B.S. in chemistry or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of most recent experience developing and application testing of creative coatings solutions.
  • Desirable - Experience with defoamers, silicones and other additives in the Performance Chemicals portfolio.
  • Desirable - Experience with paint and coating additives (defoamers, flow, mar and slip, anti-corrosion additive etc.,);

water and stain repellent coatings for porous and non-porous surfaces; protective coating additives

  • Ability to setup up experiments with proper controls to provide needed data output. Interpret data and make deductions / inferences to provide proper experimental design.
  • Must be able to plan, manage and prioritize multiple work assignments while achieving high throughput.
  • Must have excellent decision-making skills and the ability to work effectively with all other levels of the organization and have a demonstrated orientation to teamwork principles.
  • Strong presentation skills, be action / results oriented, attention to detail and demonstrate organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Willingness to travel as needed.
