General Description :
This management position in the Campus Safety department serves as the supervisor for all professional and student on-duty field and office staff within the department.
The primary responsibility of the Operations Manager is to provide direction for departmental staff and ensure all campus incidents are addressed according to department and university policies and procedures.
This position is expected to respond in person to incidents, patrol, and perform building checks. The Operations Manager is responsible for coaching, training, mentoring and evaluating both student and professional staff.
This position also acts as incident commander for any significant incidents on campus. The position reports to the Executive Director of Campus Safety and Emergency Management.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities :
- Supervise the daily operation of the Campus Safety department, ensuring all necessary duties are completed.
- Supervise assigned Professional Safety Officers and student employees.
- Lead and collaborate with community partners to develop and implement culturally responsive and engaged security practices within PLU and the surrounding community.
- Serve as a culturally responsive partner and community caretaker with and for PLU students, including Campus Safety student staff, as they learn about and engage safety as a part of their expected learning outcomes at PLU.
- Maintain the daily staff schedule, ensuring all necessary positions are staffed and attendance is documented.
- Review and analyze information from previous shifts and disseminate relevant information to on-duty staff, Campus Safety administrators and other university officials.
- Implement the university’s emergency response procedures when necessary.
- Supervise training process and conduct staff training as necessary.
- Patrol the campus and respond to emergency calls for assistance.
- Supervise staff in the enforcement of university policies.
- Coordinate the response by local fire and police department personnel when they are called to the campus.
- Work with other university departments on crime prevention tactics.
- Coordinate with other departments on resolving campus incidents.
- Ensure that all on-duty staff are properly equipped to perform their duties.
- Write and disseminate reports as required.
- Review staff incident reports, ensuring their completeness and accuracy.
- Ensure all staff members are following proper department and university procedures and respond accordingly when procedures are not followed.
- Perform dispatcher duties as needed including, answering multi-line phone, entering data into computer system, and addressing walk-in visitors.
- Review training reports on officers-in-training.
- Provide excellent customer service to the campus community and the public and make recommendations about improvements or changes to policy, procedure, and / or equipment.
- Participate in an on-call rotation.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications :
- 4 years of progressive work experience in security or management, including some customer service. Education can substitute for some experience.
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid driver’s license. Must have had a valid driver’s license for at least 2 years.
- First aid / CPR / AED certification required and provided upon employment.
- Finalist applicants must satisfactorily complete pre-employment background checks, including a driving abstract check, and pass PLU’s Driver’s Certification Training.
Preferred Qualifications :
- Bachelor’s degree or higher.
- Experience of progressively responsible supervisory duties.
- Experience working with college students in a supervisory role.
Work Conditions :
- Work is normally split between indoor office work and the field patrol environment.
- Exposure to all kinds of weather conditions and occasional exposure to physical risk.
Physical Requirements :
- Ability to walk, run, or climb stairs for extended periods of time.
- Must be physically able to respond quickly in an emergency situation.
