Job Description

Description :

NAYA Family Center seeks a community oriented leadership development professional to be NAYA’s first Leadership Development Coordinator.

This role will oversee the LEAD (Leadership, Entrepreneurial, Apprenticeship and Design) Program, the Portland Youth and Elders Council (PYEC) and the Community Advisory Panel, with a focus on empowering the Native American community.

NAYA offers an exceptional benefits package, including free medical, dental and vision insurance for employees (and affordable care for family members), 401(k) retirement plan with 6% match, paid vacation and paid holidays.

This is a full-time role with work hours of 9 am to 6 pm with a one hour unpaid lunch. As is typical of community development roles, attending occasional evening and weekend events is required.

After training and onboarding are complete, this role may work from home most Mondays and Fridays. This role reports to Will Miller, Government Affairs Manager.

Pay is $60,000 to $65,000 / year.

Who You Are

  • You have at least three years of experience in community engagement, leadership development, training programs or related work.
  • Ideally, you have lived or work experience in the Native community.
  • You have event planning experience and you are a master of the details. You know that the details make an event.
  • You are an exceptional project manager. You always have a plan, and you always meet your deadlines.
  • You have experience convening and facilitating group meetings. You aren’t afraid of facilitating a meeting where participants share strongly held views.

You are an expert at helping people feel heard.

  • You have experience and expertise in delivering training. You are comfortable at the front of the room and you don’t mind having the mic in your hand.
  • You are self aware. You listen well and center others. You are generally OK making mistakes and taking responsibility for them.
  • You have had strong partnerships with your previous supervisors. You know the importance of keeping your supervisor informed of your progress and your challenges.

You don’t go it alone.

You don’t hesitate to roll up your sleeves and pitch in, even when it’s not your job.

What You’ll Do

Oversee the LEAD Program, a culturally specific leadership development program for up to twenty participants each year.

The LEAD model is not top-down, but instead is cohort-based and relies on participants’ inherent strengths and sacred value.

  • Plan and lead PYEC meetings to identify and discuss key issues in the American Indian / Alaskan Native (AI / AN) community.
  • Cultivate and develop the Community Advisory Panel to mobilize community members through policy, advocacy, and systems change.
  • Actively recruit participants in all programs, including recruiting residents from NAYA’s housing units.
  • Provide trainings and ongoing professional development opportunities to graduates of the LEAD program
  • Collaborate with NAYA community engagement staff to develop monthly workshops and trainings
  • Write monthly reports and contribute to grant writing.
  • Forge new connections with organizations who run similar programs, with the aim of learning best practices and improving NAYA’s programs.
  • Coordinate with NAYA’s communications staff to promote your programs and events.
  • Integrate culturally relevant practices into all aspects of your program.
