Position Summary :

The Lead Design Engineer provides design engineering support to the design engineering team and helps ensure that design work is performed to current best practices and is accurate from the inception of a design to shipment.

In the role, the Lead Design Engineer will not have direct reports; however, is asked to support the technical execution on projects and help identify and implement processes to help improve the overall efficiency of the team.

The Lead Design Engineer will work closely with the design team and other engineering leads to identify areas of improvement for the design team and grow engineering analysis capabilities.

Key responsibilities for the Lead Design Engineer are to lead and support the day-to-day activities of the design team, improve technical capabilities, and drive interdepartmental collaboration.

The position requires a deep understanding of engineering machine design processes, turbomachinery, excellent interpersonal skills, and a strong desire to drive continuous improvement and increase the technical capability of the design team.

Key Results Areas :

  • Lead and support the day-to-day activities of the design team as they relate to ongoing projects.
  • Direct and review design engineering work and help designers solve problems on a day-to-day basis.
  • Identify risks and potential problems within ongoing projects and escalate to the project team and / or engineering leadership as needed.
  • Act as the primary reviewer for team designs ensuring that layouts are complete and accurate throughout the design review process.
  • Check new and revised engineering drawings and stack-ups to ensure they are complete and accurate.
  • Ensure the design review process is followed and implemented according to current best practices.
  • Direct and review the work of other engineers and designers in the layout and in detailed design tasks to ensure the product meets customer requirements in a cost-effective and manufacturable design.
  • Adhere to programmatic activities such as maintaining project budgets, schedules, and formal design review deadlines.
  • Improve the technical capabilities of the design team through development of standards, tools, training opportunities, and increasing the technical acumen of the overall team.
  • Lead regular team meetings to enhance communication, collaboration, and standardization across the team.
  • Develop and implement new engineering analysis tools and assist in team training.
  • Standardize and document best practices and develop design guides.
  • Identify and implement process improvements and tools, improving the capabilities and efficiency of the team.
  • Drive interdepartmental collaboration throughout the organization and provide feedback on areas of focus for the team, drive organizational success, and improve B-N processes.
  • Collaborate with other departments in Design for Manufacturability, Assembly, Inspection, and Test (DFMAIT) discussions and reviews as the representative of the design team and in support of projects.
  • Develop process improvements and standardized work through collaboration with internal suppliers and customers in other departments.

Qualifications :

To qualify for this position, an individual must possess the knowledge, training, experience, and abilities required.

Education and Training :

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent combination of education and experience working in a high aptitude engineering and manufacturing environment.

Experience :

  • Minimum twelve plus years related experience and / or training performing design engineering with a working knowledge of FEA / CFD.
  • Proven rotating machinery expertise and experience with associated systems.
  • Comprehensive understanding of rotating machinery design, analysis, test, and troubleshooting.
  • Comprehensive understanding in the following applicable areas of turbomachinery design :
  • Design (3D modeling, manufacturing detail prints, GD&T, M&P principles, BOM / part number structuring in ERP systems, etc.)
  • Analysis (Familiar with vibrations, balance, stress, thermal, bearings, seals, fasteners, and rotordynamics)

Other :

  • Must be willing to work overtime as required.
  • Travel up to 10% of working time.

Desired Job Qualification :

  • Experience in ANSYS and Solidworks.
  • Applicable training certificates (Solidworks, FEA, CFD, etc.) and successful completion of the Engineer-in-Training (E.

I.T.) or Fundamentals of Engineering (F.E.) are desirable.

Skills :

To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies :

  • Proficient in specialized engineering application software such as SolidWorks, ANSYS, CFX, etc.
  • Ability and willingness to abide by set policies and / or safety programs established by BNI, our clients, and / or regulatory agencies which govern our performance and behavior in the normal course of our work while on BNI or the client’s property or job site.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports, and legal documents.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Ability to successfully plan and implement objectives within established timelines and work schedules.
  • Ability to analyze problems and develop effective solutions at both strategic and functional levels.
  • Demonstrate behavior consistent with company values.
  • Ability to work independently, with minimal direction as a highly motivated self-starter and within a team-oriented culture.

ITAR Requirements :

To conform to U.S. Government commercial space technology export regulations, including the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR), 8 U.

Compensation and Benefits :

The salary range for this role is $130,000 to $148,000. This range represents the anticipated minimum and maximum base + bonus for this position based upon a good faith and reasonable estimate.

The final compensation for this position will be set based on the applicant’s qualifications (education, training, and / or experience related to this role), and therefore, may fall outside the range shown, depending on the circumstances.
