Department Summary

Key responsibilities of the Director are to identify process, procedures, infrastructure, methods, and HR staff development and training needs to enable efficient operations and to ensure accurate and responsive human resource services.

The Director applies University policies, procedures, state / federal labor laws, and oversees the process for academic and staff personnel actions in adherence with these policies and laws.

Specifically, the Director provides oversight for academic action review and central processing for approximately 80 faculty (ladder, adjunct, Lecturer, recall, and without salary faculty), for teaching assistants, visiting and postdoctoral scholars housed in the school and serves as primary liaison between the UCLA Academic Personnel Office and the School.

The Director provides oversight of staff through Human Resources Administration management for approximately 40 staff in the school and is primary liaison with Campus Human Resources.

  • Examples include employee and labor relations, payroll, recruitment, workers' compensation; reviews and writes grievance-related and employee action responses, EEOC and DFEH claims;
  • represents the school in hearings; serves as the point of contact and subject matter expert for UCPath and administrator for Tracker I-9;

represents the school in Workers' Compensation proceedings; and works with Risk Management on transitional return to work actions and requests for workplace accommodations.

Other responsibilities and duties are to serve on Dean's Leadership Council; works with the school Chief Financial Officer and Controller in balancing the UCPath staffing roster, coordinates emergency planning and Injury Illness prevention, and the Business Continuity Plan.

Works on projects as assigned by Dean and / or Associate Dean for Academic Affairs; represents the school on campus committees as requested, reviews compensation requests (re classifications, equity adjustments, etc.

Salary & Compensation

UCLA provides a full pay range. Actual salary offers consider factors, including budget, prior experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business considerations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 8 years demonstrated management experience including selection, training delegation of responsibility, development of job standards, performance evaluation, discipline and the resolution of employee problems (Required)
  • Recent experience developing short-term and long-term goals for a large multi-function unit. (Required)
  • Demonstrated experience in UC grievance process, factfinders, and arbitration. (Required)
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience, including selection, training, and delegation of responsibility, development of job standards, performance evaluation, discipline, and the resolution of employee p (Required)
  • Experience in working in higher education, with faculty and senior administrators, with a preference for experience in academic nursing (Required)
  • Demonstrated skill in determining what information is confidential and skill in dealing with confidential and sensitive information with discretion. (Required)
  • Ability to work independently with conflicting demands, time-sensitive deadlines, frequent interruptions and / or distractions (Required)
  • Skill in speaking clearly and distinctly using appropriate vocabulary and grammar to obtain and convey information to individuals at various organizational levels. (Required)
  • Ability to follow tasks to completion with minimal direction or supervision. (Required)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Academic-Year schools pay periods and service quarters, defined start and separation dates, and summer ninths. (Required)
  • Demonstrated skill in maintaining professional demeanor and perspective when advising leadership / management on personnel actions, policies and procedures.

Demonstrated skill in conflict resolution. (Required)

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of, and proficiency in using QDB, UCPath, JDXpert, ICIMS Talent Cloud, Cognos, OPUS, Academic UC Recruit, Interfolio, Tracker I-9, TRS and other campus personnel and fiscal tools. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of UCLA's The CALL and the UC Academic Personnel Manual related to all academic appointments, advancements, dossier processes and exceptions to policy. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated skill and experience in utilizing Campus ledgers and EXCEL spreadsheet applications for the analysis of fiscal data and tracking of budgetary information. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of UC Personnel and Payroll Policies and Procedures, progressive discipline procedures, UC Bargaining Agreements and Workers Compensation Policies and Procedures. (Preferred)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable Federal, State and UC employment regulations (Family and Medical Leave, Americans Disabilities Act, Fair Labor and Standards Act, Sexual Harassment Complaint procedures). (Preferred)
  • Knowledge of the Academic Apprentice Personnel Manual related to academic apprentice personnel appointments, advancements and exceptions to policy. (Preferred)

Education, Licenses, Certifications & Personal Affiliations

Bachelor's Degree in related area or equivalent combination of education and experience (Required)
