VOLUNTEER
The mission of the Troy Fire Department is to provide the highest possible level of fire protection, rescue, and hazard mitigation services to the community.
This is accomplished with a team of professionals, both volunteer and career, by providing community risk reduction services;
firefighter training; emergency operations; and planning.
DUTIES ( A firefighter shall perform the following duties including but not limited to)
- Firefighting work extinguishing fires, lifting and pulling heavy equipment
- Perform specialized duties under emergency conditions which frequently involve considerable personal risk with potential for increased physical and emotional stress.
- Respond to incidents
- Enter burning buildings with hose lines; operate nozzles; extinguish fires
- Operate at emergencies wearing approved personal protective equipment which includes self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
- Raise, lower and climb ladders; operate on roofs to ventilate buildings where required
- Operate manual or power operated tools and equipment to assist in fire suppression, rescue or other incident and / or training related activities
- Operate detection equipment to monitor for explosive, hazardous or radioactive materials
- Remove persons from danger by individual or team methods
- Operate extrication equipment
- Take part in training sessions
- Clean apparatus, hose, other equipment and stations
- Perform other related work as required
REQUIREMENTS
- Live or work within three (3) miles of a Troy Fire Station
- Be at least 18 years of age and a high school graduate (or GED equivalent).
- Must have at the time of application, and maintain, a valid Michigan driver license with a good driving record (based on City of Troy standards).

REQUIREMENTS FOR MAINTAINING VOLUNTEER MEMBERSHIP WITHIN THE TROY FIRE DEPARTMENT INCLUDE :
- Complete the Firefighter I & II training academy within the probationary time period.
- Attend a minimum of 40 hours of training bi-annually to achieve 80 hours of training annually.
- Respond to a minimum of 50% of incidents annually during predetermined hours of availability.
- Abide by department policies at all times.
- Note : Firefighting is a physically demanding job. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and physical fitness is strongly encouraged.
