The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers : 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer.
OVERVIEW
General Statement of Duties : The Graduate Assistant for First Year Living Learning Communities (LLCs) assists with the implementation and assessment of the LLCs.
Supervision Received : Works under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Residence Life.
Supervision Exercised : Supervises the LLC Programming Assistants (student employees).
Core Duties
- Participate in the ongoing hiring, training & development of the student Programming Assistants, Resident Assistants and other paraprofessional staff assigned to the first-year LLCs.
- Assist academic partners and collaborating staff in the implementation of the first-year LLCs.
- Support the recruitment, selection, training, evaluation and supervision of the LLC Program Assistants.
- Establish relationships with residents of the LLCs to facilitate referrals to appropriate academic and administrative offices.
- Using the mission and goals of the LLC program, assist LLC student staff members in developing programs to meet the academic and social needs of the student participants.
- Attend LLC planning meetings, events and advisory boards.
- Assist with developing displays, informational brochures, pamphlets and other written materials for recruitment purposes.
- Serve on various Residence Life & Housing committees.
- Attend weekly departmental staff meetings.
- Complete assigned tasks and daily responsibilities by established deadlines
- Make oneself available to students, staff and University administrators during 20-hour per week work shifts.
- Other duties as assigned.
Essential Functions While all responsibilities listed are important to the role of the Graduate Assistant, the following are considered essential functions and must be able to be completed by the person assuming the position :
- The ability to work 20 hours per week.
- The ability to complete administrative paperwork as required.
- The ability to learn and use computer programs and maintain a social media presence.
- The ability to attend programs, meetings and events that occur during evening hours and on the weekend.
Qualifications
Applicants must be accepted in one of the University’s academic programs to be eligible to receive a graduate assistant position.
Preference will be given to students who have applied to and have been accepted into the Counselor Education Student Affairs or Higher Education Administration program by the College of Graduate Studies application deadline.
- Solid written and verbal communication skills; strong customer service orientation; ability to interact well with the diverse segments of the Bridgewater State University community.
- Preference will be given to candidates with previous experience supervising or working with college age students.
- Preference will be given to candidates with previous event planning and promotion experience.
- Strong organizational, programming, and interpersonal skills.
- Must have an understanding of and be committed to student development.
