Job Description

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking a Professional Engineer to fill a Field Engineer (Engineer III) position with the Region Four Cedar City Construction Crew.

Principal Duties A UDOT construction crew is a team responsible for administering construction projects for the Department of Transportation.

They ensure that the contractor selected delivers a quality product in a timely manner. Their responsibilities include monitoring and documenting all aspects of the work to meet the requirements set forth in the plans and specifications, managing changes and adjustments that are required in the field based on changing or unknown conditions, and testing, measuring, accepting, and paying for work that is completed.

As a Field Engineer, you will be an integral part of this team. Some of your duties will include :

  • Assisting the Resident Engineer in managing personnel, work schedules, project budgets, reporting, risk, and crew assets.
  • Spending significant time in the field to become familiar with all that is happening on multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Providing engineering field support and problem solving capabilities throughout construction.
  • Designing and developing engineering projects, and preparing engineering and design documents, including the production and / or review of CADD drawings and written specifications.
  • Tracking and reviewing product submittals for technical compliance.
  • Developing complex estimates, writing or drafting technical reports and analysis, and conducting research as part of the process of formally altering the legal contract (change orders).
  • Assisting in training field personnel to adequately inspect and enforce contract requirements, including review of field documentation and calculations for correctness and completeness.
  • Assisting in material testing, the interpretation and analysis of test results, and calculating incentives or penalties based on results.
  • Working directly with stakeholders cities, utility owners, and the public in general who may be impacted by the projects.
  • Independently manage small projects.
  • Monitoring construction contracts.
  • Working with a team to meet quality, scope, schedule, budget, and safety requirements on assigned projects.
  • Developing the knowledge and skills to be promoted to other positions within the Department.

The Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate for this position will have :

  • An active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah.
  • Prior experience in administering heavy civil construction projects and reviewing plans and specifications for constructability.
  • Proficiency with CADD software (Microstation) and 3-D modeling.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to write clearly and persuasively.
  • An understanding of contract law.
  • Experience working with the public and contractors.
  • Excellent understanding of the UDOT partnering process and have a proven ability to develop good relations with others.
  • Excellent skills in identifying and solving complex problems.
  • Self-motivation and an eagerness to learn.
  • The ability to mentor, train, and lead others.
  • Organizational skills.

Preference may be given to those who have prior experience in administering heavy civil construction projects, especially in the construction or materials aspect.

Compensation is based on level of experience. This position may also be filled as an Engineer II for candidates with a degree but without a Professional Engineer (PE) license.

For the Engineer II level (salary range $33.55 - $56.17), the ideal candidate will have :

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering; and
  • Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE); and
  • Completed at least two years of post-graduate engineering experience. (A Master's degree in a related field may be considered for one year of post-graduate experience.)

  • Working Conditions : This job may have risks which require the use of special safety precautions and equipment, e.g., working around operating machines, working on a construction site, etc.
  • Physical Requirements : The physical requirements of this job are moderate. Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand;

walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and / or for long periods of time.

  • Employee may be reassigned to a different location as deemed necessary by the Region Director / Group Leader.
  • Department of Human Resource Management rules regarding promotions and transfers apply to current state employees.
