Rutgers University Libraries (RUL) seek an experienced, innovative, and service-oriented individual to fill the position of Metadata Archivist for Special Collections and University Archives (SCUA) at Alexander Library in New Brunswick on the College Avenue Campus of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey.

Reporting to the Director of Special Collections and University Archives, the Metadata Archivist will take a leadership role in creating finding aids for SCUA archival holdings.

In this role, they will develop the necessary workflow to support archival description activities in collaboration with SCUA curators and archivists, and faculty librarians at Central Technical Services.

This encompasses archival description of SCUA collections, which include manuscripts, records, artifacts, and audiovisual holdings.

Additionally, this position will lead the migration of legacy finding aids to RUL’s ArchivesSpace platform and create base-level finding aids for unprocessed collections.

This is a one-year, full-time non-tenure-track position with the possibility of a one-year renewal. The incumbent will be a member of the New Brunswick Libraries faculty, a team of librarians committed to providing exceptional services to a diverse population of faculty, students, and community users.

The incumbent is also expected to contribute to the mission and goals of RUL by participating in appointed groups and committees.

RESPONSIBILITES : Working collaboratively with SCUA faculty and staff, the Metadata Archivist will :

  • Develop and implement policies, procedures, and workflows for best practices regarding archival description.
  • Migrate legacy finding aids to ArchivesSpace.
  • Produce base-level finding aids for unprocessed collections.
  • Determine appropriate descriptive strategies for unified discovery and access to SCUA’s holdings following DACS standards.
  • Enhance the discoverability of SCUA archival holdings by utilizing RUL system-wide tools like RUcore and ArchivesSpace.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned.

SALARY : Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. Current contractual minimum salary for appointment is $82,694.

STATUS / BENEFITS : Faculty status (Lecturer, calendar year), twelve-month appointment, retirement plan, life / health insurance, prescription drug, dental and vision plans, tuition remission, 22 vacation days annually.

  • An ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent master’s degree in archives management.
  • A minimum of three years of experience in archival description and finding aid creation in a special collections’ repository setting.
  • Demonstrated expertise in archives metadata tools and systems along with emerging technologies in this area including experience with creating EAD finding aids and with archival descriptive practices for manuscripts, audiovisual materials, and artifacts.
  • A strong command of non-MARC metadata schemas such as EAD; command of DACS principles and their application.
  • Experience using a collections management platform and / or ILS that enables the creation and management of non-MARC metadata such as Archives Space.
  • The ability to work creatively and effectively, both individually and with a team.
  • Ability to perform physical work common in archives repositories such as moving archives boxes on and off the shelf or pushing a loaded library cart to and from collection storage spaces.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; the ability to work both independently and in a collegial environment;

and experience working effectively with a diverse clientele.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

  • Expertise creating EAD finding aids and with archival descriptive practices for manuscripts, audiovisual materials, and artifacts.
  • Familiarity with MODS, MARC, and RDA.
  • Working knowledge of XML.
  • Working knowledge of authority control including LCNAF.
