HM Alpha Hotels & Resorts is seeking a talented Director of Insurance, Risk Management, and Compliance to join our team. HM Alpha is an Owner Operator specializing in the management of branded Luxury and Upper Upscale Hotels and Resorts in destination-driven markets.

JOB DESCRIPTION
As a subject matter expert, this individual will manage all aspects of HM Alpha Hotels & Resorts' Insurance Policy Programs.
The role entails protecting organizational objectives, ensuring effective management of insurable risks, and supervising, leading, or directing key internal risk stakeholders.
This position will also be responsible for administering policies, procedures, and training to ensure compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and standards across the portfolio, with a focus on California Employment law and other highly regulated states.
Responsibilities include developing reports and plans, analyzing risk insurance issues, managing corporate risks, reviewing alternative risk structures, and communicating risks that impact HM Alpha Hotels & Resorts.
Additionally, the position will ensure balance sheet protection and the safety and security of the company.
This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Serve as a liaison to insurance brokers, maintaining essential interpersonal relationships for the company and staying informed on market conditions and significant developments in the insurance industry.
- Coordinate with brokers and internal clients to gather the necessary underwriting data for placing HM Alpha Hotels & Resorts insurance policies.
- Identify, assess, and manage all insurance coverage lines (Property, Liability, Workers Compensation, Business Auto, Builders Risk, EPLI, Fiduciary, Crime, Inland Marine, and Cyber) to ensure optimal asset protection and compliance with statutory and contractual requirements.
- Identify gaps in insurance coverage, obtain quotes for management and ownership options.
- Monitor market conditions and trends related to innovative insurance products relevant to the company’s various business operations (e.
g., emergency communication applications).
Financial Responsibility : Control insurance costs and ensure appropriate coverage terms. Provide management with marketing studies and price comparisons when binding major coverages.
Assist the accounting team with billing / refunds and annual budgeting of insurance premiums and claim settlements.
- Corporate safety awareness : Implement safety recommendations from safety and loss control specialists, reduce hazards identified through claim experience, claim trends, and safety walkthroughs.
- Assist with corporate crisis plans (business continuity, hurricane preparedness, etc.) and provide necessary recommendations and implementation support to the committee.
- Handle general claims, adjust and settle third-party liability claims within policy deductibles, and prosecute and conclude first-party claims to ensure proper indemnification and restoration of the company’s assets.
- Manage claims reviews, liaise with third-party claims adjusters and in-house and outside counsel; ensure timely reporting of claims to carriers.
- Oversee the insurance compliance program for tenants and vendors at corporate locations, ensuring the procurement of compliant certificates of insurance.
- Monitor ongoing completed operations for general contractors to ensure compliance with statutes of repose after constructing buildings retained by the company or sold to condo associations and individuals.
- Review various contracts for insurance compliance and accuracy, negotiate contractual insurance terms, ensure compliance with contractual obligations, producing certificates of insurance accordingly.
- Maintain coordination on all insurance matters with executive management and ownership.
- Oversee the contractual transfer of risk and insurance compliance for all contracts for the Legal and Marketing departments.
- Ensure budget accuracy without exceeding the expectations of the accounting department.
- Successfully manage contract execution and loan closings for all policy documents and certificates for the company.
- Continuously enhance safety and premium mitigation in all project implementations for the Safety Groups, C-Suite, and Ownership.
- Review property procedures for compliance with applicable laws and identify potential exposures.
- Efficient administration of all Insurance Programs, and handling certain tort claims and recoveries on behalf of the company.
- Conduct property audits and advise on necessary actions.
- Ensure compliance with employment laws by staying up-to-date on regulatory changes, conducting thorough audits, updating policies as necessary, track mandatory training, and provide actionable feedback and training recommendations to address any compliance gaps.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Business, Insurance or Law preferred
- 5-10 years of relatable experience required
- Knowledge of Property and Casualty Lines of Coverage, Principles of Tort, and Damages
- Knowledge of Employment Law, specifically California Labor
- Financial & Legal analysis and understanding of coverages
- Proficiency in controlling costs and terms of policies
- Proficiency with Microsoft Suite
- Excellent communication and relationship skills
- Strong attention to detail
- Ability to interact with all levels of the organization
- Proven ability to influence stakeholders outside of reporting lines
- Proven leadership experience, including managing teams and collaborating with senior leadership
