This role is for Patrol Officers tasked with covering one of the five beats in our City. We require our officers to not only respond to service calls but also actively patrol their assigned areas and build relationships with our citizens. Officers are encouraged to seek innovative solutions to recurrent issues to help reduce crime.
Responsibilities
- Patrols assigned area, enforces traffic and criminal laws; observes and investigates unusual conditions in facilities, property or other areas; conducts investigations of felony and misdemeanor criminal activities; secures crime scenes as appropriate; investigates suspicious persons, vehicles, circumstances; deters crime by providing high visibility; takes appropriate action or makes arrests; transports arrested individuals for booking, as required; issues citations and warnings; investigates accidents; reports public safety hazards; and directs traffic.
- Assists the public regarding directions, laws, and other information as needed.
- Prepares and disseminates reports and makes recommendations on actions to be taken.
- Investigates local, state, and federal crimes which may include determining appropriate actions, resources, who to interview, appropriate evidence to be collected, and whether illegal activities are civil or criminal infractions.
- Responds to calls for service, determining level of emergency, formulating tactics, and deciding whether a report should be written.
- Enforces local, state, and federal laws; cites and / or arrests violators; provides credible court testimonies.
- Investigates traffic offenses and vehicular collisions; instructs public safety classes; conducts emergency traffic control activities; participates in specialty details; investigates a variety of in-depth cases, interrogations, and processes evidence.
Qualifications
Minimum qualifications :
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent; andBe 21 years of age by date of hire with no felony convictions; andHave a valid driver's license by date of hire; andSuccessfully pass the National Testing Network (NTN) exams.Additional requirements :
Successfully pass the Oregon Physical Abilities Test (ORPAT) administered by MPD.Meet Department of Public Safety Standards & Training (DPSST) physical standards.Successful completion of a background investigation to the satisfaction of the City.Obtain CJIS clearance upon hire.Ability to speak English clearly; knowledge of English grammar, spelling, vocabulary, and punctuation; ability to write clearly, concisely, legibly, and correctly.Ability to obtain DPSST Basic Police Certificate after completion of the academy and field training.Ability to work 24 / 7 schedules including holidays.Ability to maintain an acceptable driving record.Work Schedule and Training
The patrol teams operate on 3 / 12 and 4 / 10 weekly schedules, with an additional 8-hour training day each month. Monthly training covers defensive tactics, EVOC, crisis negotiation, MRT skills, HAZMAT awareness, ethics, leadership development, CPR / first aid, and up-to-date legal information.

Patrols, enforces laws, conducts investigations, secures scenes, deters crime, arrests as needed, transports arrested individuals, issues citations, and reports hazards.Investigates crimes, determines actions, resources, interview subjects, evidence to collect, and civil vs criminal considerations.Responds to calls for service, assesses emergency level, determines tactics, writes reports.Interacts with the public, provides directions and information; conducts public safety education; appears in court as needed.Maintains readiness for field work requiring mobility, fitness, and use of equipment.This position is part of the Medford Police Officers Association (MPOA) employee group.
