Project / Unit Description
The Applied Systems Laboratory (ASL) Systems Integration Division (SID) supports systems integration, system design, and product development projects for the Department of Defense (DoD) manned and unmanned systems.
SID research military systems specializing in avionics, electronic warfare, autonomous systems, intelligence systems, tactical communication / datalink systems;
and live, virtual, constructive training solutions. The SID team's engineering roles include Systems Engineering, Algorithm Engineering, Datalink Engineering, and Embedded Software Engineering.
Job Purpose
The Division Chief Scientist helps direct and oversees the division’s internal research and development (IRAD) program. The division chief scientist ensures IRAD activities will maintain and grow the division’s competitive position by : formulating and executing key elements of the division’s strategy, working closely with researchers and unit leads in the alignment of IRAD with other investments and awards, developing collaborations across other labs (Division Chief Scientists in particular), representing the division’s opportunities and challenges through reporting to the Lab Chief Scientist, and connecting with the broader research and sponsor community.
Additional Responsibilities
- Oversee division IRAD portfolio, including financial oversight, technical oversight, and liaison with ASL Chief Scientist.
- Partner with division leadership to create division strategic plans, sponsor-engagement opportunities, and proposal development.
- Create technical plans to advance division core technologies and capabilities.
- Coordinate with division chief engineer to ensure development process and tools support integration of new technologies into development lifecycle.
- Participate in the advancement of data fusion algorithms toward advancing sponsor fielded systems' capabilities.
- Create plan to integrate modern technologies into division product lines.
- Support the ASL Chief Scientist by participating in the ASL Applied Systems Technical Council (ASTEC).
- Form strategic relationships with key subject matter experts across ASL, GTRI, and Georgia Tech.
Required Minimum Qualifications
- Experience developing / designing complex, software-intensive, military unmanned air systems (UAS) using system engineering processes and methodologies.
- Experience with advancing technologies resulting in application in products.
Preferred Qualifications
- Active Secret Clearance.
- Experience developing data fusion, resource management, or similar algorithms use to integrate sensor and effector systems.
- Experience with systems design including architectures, requirements, behavior allocation, interface design.
Travel Requirements
10% - 25% travel.
Education and Length of Experience
- 9-14 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or any technical degree.
- 7-12 years of related experience with a Masters’ degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or any technical degree.
- 4-9 years of related experience with a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or any technical degree.
U.S. Citizenship Requirements
Due to our research contracts with the U.S. federal government, candidates for this position must be U.S. Citizens.
Clearance Type Required
Candidates must be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
