Job Summary

The Institute for Bioengineering and Bioscience (IBB)'s Systems Mass Spectrometry Core (SyMS-C) Facility ( research.gatech.

edu / bio / research / core-facilities ) at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia invites applications for a research faculty position in mass spectrometry, metabolomics, and bioinformatics.

Applicants will be considered at the Research Scientist I or II rank. The candidate will be involved with providing bioinformatic expertise for the metabolomic research services in the Systems Mass Spectrometry Core Facility.

An ideal candidate should have experience in the latest bioinformatic tools and have coding experience in R, python, etc.

Familiarity with ThermoFisher Scientific Compound Discoverer is a plus.Activities include spectral processing, feature annotation, statistical analysis, pathway mapping, and data visualization.

The ideal candidate would have the ability to optimize existing pipelines or build new pipelines to increase throughput.

The candidate will be expected to work collaboratively with our team of researchers, work closely the SyMS-C faculty leadership on grants to support core initiatives, and represent SyMS-C quality, standards, and integrity in all aspects and activities.

This role requires hands-on lab work to drive projects forward and interfacing in a collegial and professional manner with faculty, student, staff, and external customers of the facility.

Assistance with grant and manuscript writing are expected. This position typically will advise and counsel : researchers, students, student assistants.

Candidates are expected to demonstrate an exceptional commitment to the teaching and mentoring of students.

Due to the responsibilities of this position, this role requires 100% on-site presence on Georgia Tech's Atlanta campus.

Responsibilities

  • Perform bioinformatic analysis to support core projects.
  • Build, revise, and optimize data processing and analysis workflows for use in the core.
  • Provide advice towards experimental design of core projects.
  • Prepare reports and aid in manuscript or grant preparation for core clients.
  • Train core clients or bioinformatic students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Research Scientist I

Bachelor's degree in bioinformatics or related field.

Research Scientist II

  • Master's degree in bioinformatics or related field and three (3) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of that degree, or
  • Master's degree in bioinformatics or related field and five (5) years of relevant full-time experience after completion of a Bachelor's degree, or
  • A Doctoral degree.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in bioinformatics or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Coding experience to work with research datasets.
  • Use of required skills practiced in a university environment.
  • The successful candidate should have extensive research experience in liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry and metabolomics.

They should be well versed in bioinformatic methods and software along with approaches to streamline pipelines. The candidate should also have experience using Compound Discoverer or other relevant metabolomic analysis software and formatting the output data into customer-readable formats.

  • Training of students, research staff, and faculty will be a responsibility along with providing excellent technical and applications support.
  • Great communication (both written and spoken), organization, and time management skills are essential to performing at a high level.

Proposed Salary

  • Salary up to $58,000 per year with full benefits.
  • A portion of this role is dependent on sponsored research and / or this Core Facility's Department Sales and Services (DSS).

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

This job requires a working knowledge of current bioinformatics practices and tools to perform spectral processing, feature annotation, statistical analysis, pathway mapping, and data visualization.

Multi-omic experience would be highly desirable. Ability to process and visualized mass spectrometry imaging datasets would be a plus.

Skills in communication, customer service, work guidance and instruction are required as is the use of specialty and general computer applications.
