Job Summary
The University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (UWM) seeks a visionary, entrepreneurial and collaborative academic leader to serve as the dean of the College of Arts and Architecture.
The next dean will articulate a vision and strategy for distinguishing the College of the Arts and Architecture as a leading school of architecture, urban planning, and the arts, charting a path for the college’s future.
The dean will inspire excellence in teaching, research, practice, and service. In addition,the dean will foster community within the newly formed college which consists of two existing schools with rich histories and exceptional programs.
The dean of the College of the Arts and Architecture will report directly to Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Andrew Daire and serve as chief executive and academic officer for the college.
As such, the inaugural dean will provide leadership, vision, and strategic planning to advance thecollege’s mission; oversee the college’s academic and administrative operations, including personnel, budget, academic programs, physical facilities, research, professional practice, and educational programs;
and serve as the primary internal and external spokesperson for the college, with emphasis on the vital relationship between the college and the Milwaukee community. Minimum Qualifications
- An earned terminal degree in architecture, urban planning, the arts, or a related discipline.
- Qualification for appointment as a tenured full professor in the College of Arts and Architecture.
Preferred Qualifications
- Visionary leadership. Ability to articulate and communicate a compelling vision for the College of the Arts and Architecture that aligns with the institution’s overall mission and goals and the capacity to inspire and motivate faculty, staff, and students to actively contribute to the realization of the shared vision.
- Budgetary and financial acumen. Demonstrated experiences in effective budget and fiscal management, understanding, and functioning within an RCM-based budgetary environment.
Experience in responsible resource management, including budget oversight, fundraising, and allocation of resources to support the college’s mission and strategic priorities.
Academic excellence. Strong commitment to academic rigor and a record of fostering an environment that promotes excellence in teaching, research, and artistic endeavors.
Demonstrated experience and success in developing and maintaining research and creative activities commensurate with UWM’s Carnegie Classifications of R1 (very high research activities) and Community Engagement, while fostering a culture of innovation and creativity within.
- Interdisciplinary collaboration. Promoting interdisciplinary collaboration among diverse academic disciplines, fostering an environment that encourages innovative partnerships and programs.
- Inclusive excellence. Authentic commitment and demonstrated experiences in advancing inclusive excellence for faculty, staff, and students, particularly those who have been historically underrepresented in the academy.
Extensive experience working in or leading an institution in which inclusive excellence is an integral part of its mission and composition.
Exemplary skill in communicating and collaborating with diverse groups. Evidence of engagement and leadership in advancing institutional inclusive excellence efforts in prior roles.
- Strategic planning. Skill in strategic planning, including the ability to develop and implement long-term goals and objectives that align with and promote the university’s vision, mission, and goals.
- Technology integration. Awareness of the latest technological advancements in architecture, urban planning, and the arts, and the ability to integrate relevant technologies into the curriculum and research activities of the college.
- Community engagement with a global perspective. Strengthening integration of the college into the city of Milwaukee, region, and beyond.
Understanding the global context within which the college’s disciplines operate and the ability to prepare students to be globally competent and engaged citizens.
- Strategic enrollment management and student success. Demonstrated experiences in advancing strategic enrollment management efforts along with a commitment to student achievement and well-being, including the development of programs and initiatives that support experiential learning, career development, and the overall student experience.
- Effective communication. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with internal and external stakeholders, including faculty, students, alumni, and the broader academic and professional communities.
