Overview

The essential duties and responsibilities of a Lead Instructor include, but are not limited to guiding and supporting outdoor education programs, mentoring seasonal instructors, and collaborating with administration to ensure safe, engaging, and well-organized activities for students and groups.

Responsibilities

• Lead songs, games, and activities for large groups; make general announcements.
• Deliver teambuilding and programming for Retreat and Corporate Groups.
• Understand and apply lean methodologies (Toyota Production System) to improve program and daily operations.
• Assist in designing new revenue streams and programs to extend the program calendar.
• Collaborate with administration to plan and implement staff training twice a year; provide ongoing training opportunities.
• Care for ropes course equipment; count climbers; communicate issues to the Director; set up and take down elements.
• Assist the Assistant Director with management of student discipline during Outdoor Education season.
• Anticipate safety hazards and health needs; respond calmly to emergencies; provide basic first aid as trained.
• Supervise 4th–8th grade students in a residential outdoor science school setting; manage cabin responsibilities and supervision of High School Leaders.
• Communicate with the Director regarding questions, problems, or concerns about the program or staff housing.
• Design and complete two major projects annually to improve aspects of the program or site.
• Perform other duties as assigned; care for equipment and supplies; leave teaching areas in good condition for the next instructor; develop teaching aids as assigned.
• Mentor seasonal Program Instructors with instructional and programming feedback; assist in site upkeep, including daily cleaning and trail work.
• Teach activity groups of up to 15–16 students in outdoor settings; deliver lesson plans in science, outdoor education, and leadership; address any discipline or issues with supervisor.
• Provide instruction for up to 15-16 students; oversee instruction and communicate with supervisor any discipline or issues.

Position Specific Information

The Fall 2025 season will run from July 28 to December 19.
