Job Summary
GateWay Community College is now hiring an Art Residential Faculty to serve in an OYO (One-Year-Only) role within the Arts, Humanities, and Social & Behavioral Sciences division.
This OYO position may be extended annually for up to three years total. This position will serve as the Arts Program Coordinator, manage the art studio, and instruct students from diverse backgrounds and / or cultures in foundational art classes such as drawing, life drawing, color theory, painting, watercolor painting, two-dimensional design, three-dimensional design, and digital design in a variety of modalities (in-person, online, and hybrid) using best practices in instruction and assessment methods.
This position will begin Friday, August 9, 2024.
Additional Information
This is a short-term position and it has an expected job end date of 06 / 30 / 2025 with renewal based on available funds and the needs of MCCCD.
Essential Functions
- Provides classroom instruction to a diverse population of students on a wide variety of foundational art topics using multiple methods of instruction, assessment, and appropriate technologies to engage students in learning, enhance teaching, and promote student success;
- Designs and develops written / digital curricula, syllabi, course outlines, and materials within the division and the district;
- Evaluates student knowledge of subject matter taught and maintains course grades, prepares and grades exams and other assignments, and utilizes Canvas and appropriate teaching platforms and technologies for course administration;
- Promotes pedagogical and professional growth by attending conferences, courses, seminars, workshops, and / or discussion / reading groups and translates learning from those experiences into ways to be innovative, creative, and engaging in the classroom / campus;
- Holds support hours to assist, advise, and mentor students;
- Serves as the Art Program Coordinator and works collaboratively with other faculty, staff, and the larger community to improve student learning through a variety of ways and to enhance the art program
- Engages in the academic life of the college and participates in service duties such as committees and other extracurricular events in the program, department, college, and district;
- Facilitates activities and events to engage students, colleagues, and the community with art, including service as the lead coordinator of the college’s art gallery;
- Maintains a safe and effective art facility, including equipment used in the classrooms
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree or higher in one of the following fields : MFA in Art, Fine Art, Studio Art, Visual Art, Photography, Graphic Design, Digital Media, Media Arts
Master’s degree in any field with 18 graduate-level credits in Art,

Desired Qualifications
A. Master of Fine Arts in Fine Arts with a concentration in Ceramics, Metalworking, Painting or Drawing
B. Two (2) or more years of experience post-graduate teaching foundational art courses in Ceramics, Metalworking, Painting or Drawing at a community college, college or university
C. Experience with teaching foundational Art class such as life drawing, color theory, two-dimensional design, three-dimensional design, printmaking, and digital design as demonstrated by academic course work, portfolio, or experience
D. Experience implementing best practices in college-level art curriculum design, pedagogy, and assessment with diverse populations and abilities and / or cultural backgrounds
E. Evidence of a record of exhibitions, curating an art gallery, publications or other professional art related activities
F. Experience managing an Art program and an Art Studio with safety compliance
Special Working Conditions
- Will be required to travel or be assigned to all GateWay locations
- May require some evenings or weekends
- May require prolonged periods of viewing a computer screen
- May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs
- May be exposed to hazardous chemicals
- Will be required to work in an area of light to heavy noise levels daily
