Job Description : \n\nSalary : $42,000.00 Job Summary New River Community and Technical College is seeking a nine-month (9) full-time faculty member with an extensive background in electrical systems, manual / automatic transmissions and drivetrains, air brake systems, and automotive / diesel engine performance. Responsibilities include advising students, developing, modifying, and assessing the effectiveness of curricula, participating in department / college activities, serving on committees, and providing college service, particularly activities that enhance the academic life of the college. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience with electric and hybrid vehicle technologies and will take a leadership role in shaping the curriculum to expand our existing program into EV / Hybrid automotive education, ultimately developing a degree pathway in this area. Other professional duties related to the position include professional development activities. The Instructional Specialist is part of a team responsible for instructing, training, and preparing students for careers in automotive repair services, enabling them to become employable or continue their education in a related field. The instructor will also develop, review, and revise instructional materials as necessary, and will evaluate student progress and establish objectives to facilitate maximum learning potential. The position requires the ability to travel. Nature of Work The Instructional Specialist will be directly responsible to the Dean of the program. Some authorities of the specific Dean will be delegated to the Department Chairperson, with whom the instructor will work cooperatively in the best interest of the college and its students. The primary duties of the successful candidate will be teaching a full range of diesel technology courses for New River Community and Technical College. This position is located at the Advanced Technology Center in Ghent, WV, but may involve travel to other campuses for a day, evening, and / or weekend classes. Distinguishing Characteristics Performs other functions as required or assigned. Also complies with all Policies and Standards. Summary of Responsibilities Develops syllabi that clearly outline the course requirements, rationale, goals, and objectives. Selects textbooks and other resources for the class. Prepares class sessions and assignments to help students grasp course content and how it integrates with overall student learning outcomes for the course. Teaches courses according to the catalog descriptions and defined course standards and outcomes Creates a learning environment that encourages student involvement and participation. Documents students attendance, participation, and academic progress by giving and grading assignments, projects, quizzes, and / or examinations that lead to a final grade. Submits course grades to the Registrar by the assigned date. Are accessible to students outside the classroom, providing ample periods for counseling and mentoring students in matters related to academic success, goals, and development. When called upon, functions as an official academic advisor, counseling students about courses, academic sequence, and program selections. Maintains and disseminates current information about services available to students throughout the school. Develops and administers pre- and post-tests for each class taught, submitting results to the supervisor as requested at the end of each semester Participates in and contributes to curriculum development by planning, developing, and evaluating new and existing courses and curriculum. Participates in the development and implementation of academic policies, guiding principles, objectives, and functions following the philosophy of the school. Participates in faculty meetings and staff meetings, serves on committees, and participates in other activities and Commencement Exercises. Is familiar with and maintains behavior and actions consistent with school policies. Continues professional development and growth according to personal needs and certification requirements. Makes sure that student evaluations are administered near the end of each semester. Performs other responsibilities requested by the supervisor Represents the school positively to prospective students and supporters Plan, organize, and provide appropriate learning experiences within the assigned area of responsibility. Teach technical skills and knowledge to provide students with the competence to become skilled in their field. Develop lesson plans and organize class time so that demonstration, instruction, hands-on practice, review, and final activities can be accomplished within the allotted time. Continuously improves the instruction, curriculum, and equipment so this area is current with all trends in the field and is fully and properly preparing students for available and emerging jobs. Provides instructions for assigned classes in the locations and at the times designated. Creates a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students. Prepares for classes assigned and shows written evidence of preparation upon request of the immediate supervisor. Encourages students to set and maintain standards of classroom behavior. Guides the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and, in harmony with the goals, establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, and projects to communicate these objectives to students. Employs a variety of instructional techniques and instructional media. Assists in recruiting and marketing the program to prospective students. Develops curricula and provides revisions to program and course learning outcomes upon program review. Develops and maintains course syllabi, selects appropriate textbooks, and prepares lecture / lab materials. Maintains safety standards in shop areas to ensure that students are trained and follow appropriate safety practices. Makes recommendations for the purchase of new shop equipment and the safety certification of existing equipment. Participates in professional development activities to remain current in the automotive field and maintain current automotive credentials. In collaboration with the Department Chair, maintains the National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) Accreditation. Inform the Department Chair or Dean of any problems or concerns with classroom equipment or facilities. Actively participate in tool retention and preservation of department assets where appropriate. Implements the colleges mission, philosophy of education, and instructional standards and objectives. Assesses and documents the accomplishments of students regularly and provides progress reports as required. Take all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities. Attend staff and department meetings and serve on staff committees as required. Maintains accurate, complete, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and regulation. Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct, and, for the classroom, develops reasonable rules of classroom behavior and procedure, maintaining order in the classroom in a fair and just manner. Makes provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms. Strives to maintain and improve professional competence, especially regarding the specific assignment and student grade and subject area appropriateness. Establishes and maintains cooperative relationships with others. Establishes and maintains open lines of communication with students, colleagues, and parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of assigned students. Establishes and manages a Diesel Technology Advisory Board (ATAB) to ensure the timeliness of curriculum and training. Develop positive relationships with auto technology community partners in the area and actively solicit their help, including service on the Program Advisory Board. Other duties are deemed necessary and assigned by the Dean of Workforce, Technical, and Community Education. Position may require travel between campuses. Professional Development Compliance training is to be completed routinely and timely. Participate in additional professional development opportunities through LinkedIn Learning and professional organization affiliations. Five Years - Proven full-time employment experience directly related to automotive and diesel technology. - Required Automotive Services Excellence Certification - Current Automotive Services Excellence certification in at least three (3) areas of automotive or diesel technology. - Required License or Certificate Valid Driver's License - Required Associate's degree (or equivalent) in the field of automotive or diesel technology - Required ASE Master Diesel Technician - Preferred Ten years of experience in the diesel industry - Preferred Teaching experience, preferably at the community college level - Preferred Expectations Employees are expected to adhere to the Mission, Values, and Vision of the College.
